The pipeline was planned before the 80s, but was only activated in 1984. It enters Ukraine through the Sudzha measurement point and is currently the main channel for Russian methane to reach Europe, including Italy through Tarvisio, since the Nord Stream taps were closed in August.

But it is not the first time that accidents have occurred. In December 1983, a fire destroyed part of the electronic control system of a compressor station in Urengoy. Another 4 explosions were instead recorded between 2007 and 2014, all in Ukraine.
