Wind, Enel: agreement with Facebook and Adobe for energy supply

Enel Green Power North America expands the previous contract with Zuckerberg's company, signed in November 2017, for the supply of the Papillion data center. Adobe will also purchase power from Enel's Rattlesnake Creek plant

Wind, Enel: agreement with Facebook and Adobe for energy supply

Enel, through its US subsidiary for renewables Enel Green Power North America, has signed a new energy supply agreement with Facebook and Adobe for the sale of energy generated by the wind farm Rattlesnake Creek (320 MW).

The agreement with the world's most popular social network expands the previous agreement for the purchase of energy generated by Rattlesnake Creek, increasing the supply of renewable energy to Facebook's data center in Papillion, Nebraska, which is undergoing an expansion. The agreement with Adobe, on the other hand, will help the company maintain its commitment to increasing the use of renewable energy. Rattlesnake Creek, EGPNA's first wind farm in Nebraska, is under construction and is expected to enter service by the end of 2018.

“We are thrilled to partner with Facebook and Adobe on this wind farm and meet their energy demand with customized solutions,” said Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Enel's Global Renewable Energy Division, Enel Green Power. “Agreements like this clearly demonstrate our ability to collaborate with companies to create ad hoc solutions, managing multiple off-takers with different supply needs”.

The new contract between Enel and Facebook extends the long-term power supply agreement for 200 MW signed in November 2017, to gradually include the entire production of the plant by 2029, following Facebook's decision to significantly expand its data center in Papillion, about 120 miles from Rattlesnake Creek. The energy produced by the entire wind farm will guarantee 100% coverage of data center consumption from renewables.

“Powering our data centers with 100 percent renewable energy is not just a goal for Facebook, but a necessity for the entire industry,” said Bobby Hollis, director of global energy at Facebook. “The Rattlesnake Creek Wind Farm will enable us to ensure the operation of our future Data Center in Papillion, fulfilling our desire to expand the energy market for other corporate buyers as well, such as Adobe.”

Under the agreement with Adobe, power and renewable energy credits generated by a 10 MW portion of Rattlesnake Creek will be sold to the software company through a 2019-2028 power purchase agreement, before the All of the plant's output goes to Facebook's data center in 2029. Strategic energy management services firm Competitive Energy Services has been working with Adobe as a partner to implement the deal.

“We are thrilled to reach this further milestone in our sustainability goals, thanks to the agreement with Enel and Facebook,” said Vince Digneus, sustainability strategist, Adobe. “Collaboration is everything and we believe PPA deals like this are the right way forward. Large-scale renewable energy purchases contribute fundamentally to the achievement of the objectives set in the Science Based Targets initiative and are of crucial importance for the decarbonization of US grids”.
