The world of energy confirms itself at the top in terms of profits and turnover in the Italian industrial panorama. Enel ed Eni they rank at the top for revenues in 2022 and, based on the partial accounts of the first 9 months, the same happens this year. Furthermore, the company led by CEO Claudio Descalzi is the queen in Italy for profits. This is what emerges from the 58th edition of the study on Main Italian Companies edited by the Mediobanca Research Area. The study analyzes the financial statements for the 2022 financial year of 3.310 companies, divided according to the sector in which they operate. The research also contains an in-depth analysis of the 25 most dynamic and profitable manufacturing companies of the Fourth Capitalism.
Enel, Eni and GSE are the companies with the highest turnover in 2022
Dominating the rankings billed 2022 in industry and services are three public energy-oil groups (the only ones with sales exceeding 100 billion euros): Enel (135,7 billion euros), Eni (132,5 billion) e GSE (120,6 billion). The fourth position is also occupied by an operator in the energy sector, Edison (29,6 billion). The first manufacturing company is FCA Italy (now Stellantis Europe), fifth, down one position, with a turnover of 24 billion euros. The energy sector also returns to sixth and seventh place occupied, respectively, by A2A (22,9 billion) e Hera (20 billion), both in progression of four steps. Prysmian (rubber and cables) is eighth, down from ninth, with sales of 16,1 billion euros, followed by the oil company Saras, ninth (15,8 billion, +5 positions) and by Telecom, tenth (15,5 billion) and first operator in the services sector in the ranking. Outside the Top 10 are: Leonardo (14,7 billion), Engie Italia (13,7 billion euros), Fs (13,2 billion euros), It Italian (12,1 billion), Kuwait Petroleum Italy (11,9 billion), isab (10,5 billion), Parmalat (10,1 billion), Saipem (10 billion), Poste Italiane (9,4 billion) and closes Italian Petroleum (9,1 billion).
No company in the modern Italian distribution panorama ranks in the Top 20 of industry and services. To find one you have to go down to position 22 where it is located Superit (8,6 billion), holding company that controls Esselunga.
Samples of profits and major losses of industry and services
Eni it is the queen of profits with 13,9 billion euros in 2022 (5,8 billion in 2021). Next we find Enel with 1,7 billion (3,2 billion in 2021) and Poste Italiane with 1,5 billion (1,6 billion). isab, in fourth position with 1,5 billion, recovers the 2021 loss of 86 million euros. Gucci Gucci closes at 1,4 billion euros (+16%). In the first place of losses is located Telecom with 2,9 billion (18,8% of sales), although an improvement compared to 2021 when the result was -8,7 billion. They follow Costa Cruises which records a loss of 2,1 billion euros (95,9% of sales) and Sky Italian Holdings with a negative result of 0,7 billion (35,6% of turnover).
The Top 20 in manufacturing
Considering the alone manufacturing, the first 20 companies that make up the ranking achieve an aggregate turnover of 151,8 billion euros, or 237 billion less than the overall value totaled by the three energy-oil companies on the podium (388,8 billion). The top 20 manufacturing operators all recorded a growth in turnover which, in total, stood at +17,4% compared to 2021. The most represented sector is the mechanical one with 6 companies (FCA Italy, Leonardo, Fincantieri, Iveco, Nuovo Pignone Holding e Ferrari) of which 5 manufacturers of transport vehicles, followed by 4 food manufacturers (Parmalat, Cremonini, Barilla Holding e veronesi Holding), 4 metallurgical (Marcegaglia Holding, Finarvedi, Riva Electric Ovens e Chimet), 2 operating in rubber and cables (Prysmian e Pirelli), one in skins and leather (Prada), a pharmaceutical company (A. Menarini Industrie Farmaceutiche Riunite), one in building products (Buzzi Unicem) and a chemistry (Mapei).
The Top 5 by turnover

In the paper industry the queen is Sofidel with a turnover of 2,8 billion euros. In second place there is Burgo Group (2,1 billion). It is in third position Matter (1,2 billion) followed closely Tronchetti Paper Industries (1,1 billion) e Smurfit Kappa Italia (1 billion).
In the pharmaceutical sector the first is A. Menarini Industrie Farmaceutiche Riunite, with a turnover of 4,2 billion euros and above I asked Pharmaceuticals (2,7 billion) e Pfizer (2,5 billion). They close the Top 5 in the sector Comifar (2,5 billion) e Angelini Holding (2 billion).
In the system of Wood-Furniture soars Ikea Italia Retail which, with a turnover of 2 billion euros, occupies first position ahead of Mondo Convenienza Holding (1,5 billion) e Inca Properties, parent company of Friul Carving Industries (1 billion). They follow Saviola Holding (0,9 billion) e Poltronesofa Holding (0,6 billion).
The Top 5 companies mechanical and electronic sees first place Nuovo Pignone Holding with sales of 5 billion euros. They follow Brembo (3,6 billion), Danieli & C. – Officine Meccaniche (3,5 billion), Ali Holding (2,8 billion) e STMicroelectronics (2,5 billion).
It excels in the transport sector FCA Italy (now Stellantis Europe) with a turnover of 24 billion euros. Leonardo is second with 14,7 billion, while Fincantieri holds third position (7,3 billion). They close the Top 5 Iveco (6,8 billion) e Volkswagen Group Italia (6,4 billion).
Gucci Gucci is the leader of the Fashion system (5,8 billion) and precedes Prada (4,2 billion), Luxottica Group (4 billion), Calzedonia Holding (3 billion) e Moncler (2,6 billion).
Finally, in the sector glassmaker the first is berlin packaging Europe (1,1 billion). The second player is Stevanate GROUP (1 billion) followed by OI Italy e Zignago Holding (both 0,9 billion). The Top 5 in the sector closes Verallia Italy with a turnover of 0,7 billion euros.
In IV Capitalism there are 25 the most dynamic companies
They are 25 dynamic companies of the Italian Fourth Capitalism, i.e. those in the intermediate size range in the Italian economic system, which have grown in turnover and profitability both compared to 2021 and compared to pre-Covid levels. These are companies that in 2022 achieved an increase in real turnover of at least 20% compared to 2021, an increase in nominal turnover equal to or greater than 40% compared to 2019 and an impact of the result on turnover of no less than 4%. % in both 2022 and 2019. Among these 25, 10 present the best indicators and they are: Techno probe, Dompé Holdings, White International, Betamotor, unox, Fope, Vibram, Sinv Holding, Cromodora Wheels e B&C Speakers.

In 2022 the ranking of top 20 Italian banks (based on total tangible assets) does not undergo large variations. In first place Intesa Sanpaolo whose tangible assets amount to 965,7 billion euros (-8,9% compared to 2021), followed by UniCredit (855,4 billion, -6,5%) e CDP (400,6 billion, -3%). New entry Bolzano Savings Bank following the consolidation of Banca di Cividale. However, it is no longer present Carige incorporated into BPER Banca. The first two banks have tangible assets equal to 95% of Italian GDP.
The tangible assets of Italian institutions amount to 2.866 billion euros, down by 4,3% on 2021 (non-consolidated data).

In the insurance sector Generali maintains absolute dominance of the Top 10 groups with gross premiums amounting to 2022 billion euros in 79,8 or 59,2% of the total achieved by the entire sector. They follow the group Vita Post (17,6 billion) e Unipol Group (12 billion).
Enel is once again first in the ranking of Italian holding companies with financial investments equal to 2022 billion euros in 67,9 and precedes state Railways (50,1 billion) followed by nexi (18,8 billion), third place.
After the incorporation of Sanpaolo Invest Sim e Cordusio Sim (in Fideuram – Intesa Sanpaolo Private Banking and Unicredit respectively), the ranking of the main SIMs referring to the 2022 financial year is dominated by Equita Sim with an intermediation margin of 62,2 million euros, followed by Tracks Yes (40,5 million) e Intermonte Sim (37,8 million).
UniCredit Leasing leads the ranking of 26 leasing companies, closing 2022 with rental assets of 8,8 billion euros. They follow at a distance Alba Leasing (4,8 billion) e Sardaleasing (3,4 billion).
Findomestic Bank is the first factoring and consumer credit company, with receivables amounting to 20,5 billion euros ahead of FCA Bank (now Crédit Agricole Auto Bank – 17,4 billion) e Agos Ducato (14,8 billion).
