Eni: floating LNG plant ready to set sail for Mozambique

Eni held today the naming ceremony of Coral Sul FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas), il first floating LNG plant which will sail to Africa. The FLNG, which is part of the Coral South project, will now be towed and anchored in the Rovuma Basin off Mozambique. It is a floating facility 432 meters long and 66 meters wide, weighs around 220.000 tons and can accommodate up to 350 people. When it arrives in Mozambique waters, the campaign will be launched installation at a depth of 2.000 meters. The plant also has a gas liquefaction capacity of 3,4 million tons per year and will produce 450 billion cubic meters of gas from the giant Coral field, located in the Rovuma basin.

The start of production is expected in the second half of 2022. The plant, underlines Eni in a note, "will help to increase the availability of gas in a highly competitive market context".

In addition to Eni, the Coral South project is attended by the partners of Area 4, operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture, a joint venture set up by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70% stake in the concession, exploration and production contract. The investment was approved in 2017, while the construction activities of the plant started in 2018. “In parallel with the construction activities in Korea, several activities have been undertaken in Mozambique, with the full support of the local authorities, including the drilling and completion campaign in ultra-deep water (2000m wd)”, continues Eni.

Based on forecasts, the project should generate significant revenues for the country and will create more than 800 new jobs during the operating period.

Stefano Maione, director of development, operations and energy efficiency at Eni, it is 'an engineering feat of the highest level. It is in line with the launch of the development of Mozambican gas resources of the highest quality. The project fits fully into Eni's energy transition strategy, towards a decarbonised energy future, in which gas plays an essential role".
