Eni and GSE: new photovoltaic field and research in Sardinia

Eni is moving forward with its plans to reconvert abandoned plants. The oil group presented the new photovoltaic plant with a capacity of 26 MWp built with the Gse in the Saline Conti Vecchi plant in the province of Cagliari.

One year after the signing of the collaboration agreement between the two companies - 6 June 2017 -, both are committed to investing in technological innovation to promote the production of electricity from renewable sources.

"Exactly one year after the signing, the agreement between Eni and GSE produces the first concrete effects in favor of sustainable development and the fight against climate change", said the President of GSE Francesco Sperandini, explaining that "the photovoltaic system installed here in Assemini it constitutes an added value in terms of circular economy, reduction of CO2, employment, revitalization and enhancement of the territory».

The plant is part of Progetto Italia, the series of initiatives that Eni is implementing with the aim of enhancing abandoned industrial areas, especially those in the South.

«With Progetto Italia we have the goal of give new life to Syndial industrial areas that have already undergone reclamation and willing to host large-scale renewable energy plants», said Claudio Descalzi, Chief Executive Officer of Eni.

Eni conducts its operations with a view to growth, aiming at the reuse of plants it already owns and self-sustaining by avoiding waste and losses. An example of this is precisely the Assemini pole which has been identified by Eni as an area for the development of innovative technologies in the field of renewable energies: in fact, the construction of a permanent laboratory for the construction of advanced plants such as the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), developed in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In carrying out the project, GSE intervened by providing the know-how acquired in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector, completing the analyzes on the environmental and socio-economic advantages of Progetto Italia that Eni is carrying out.

«The investment of 260 million euros will lead to the production of approximately 0,4 TWh/year of electricity from renewable sources in Italy. This plant at the Saline, with a power of 26 MWp and an expected production of around 42 GWh/year, consolidates our strategy based on the commitment that has been made in the area for years to actively take part in the transition of the energy mix towards a low carbon future», concluded Descalzi.
