Energy: Sardinia test bench for the Government

Methanization of the island is decarbonization arriving in Parliament - The M5S in difficulty with infrastructure - The Democratic Party asks for clarity.

Energy: Sardinia test bench for the Government

The opposition of the M5S for new infrastructures risks nullifying Sardinia's energy projects. In the Productive Activities Commission of the Chamber, Enel asked the Government for a serious and defined timetable for the phase out of coal and the methanization network. Closely around the Democratic Party with a question asks the Ministers of Economic Development, Environment and Infrastructure to clarify the use of natural gas on the island. A complex story around which billionaire investments revolve and the hope that Sardinia too can participate in the national and European energy evolution.

Companies in the sector are already committed to making this happen, not only for their business, but also to settle a historic debt. Natural gas on the island has been talked about since the 90s. In various Municipalities, work on the gas networks has begun and investments are high. But the deputy of Sassari Gavino Manca and his other colleagues ask for detailed information. Not only. The Democratic Party moves on the energy-environmental scenario to also counter the controversies of some environmentalist associations who say no to methane, military bases, certain merchant traffics.

The Pd deputies in questioning the government put together the other major energy issue of the island: the abandonment of coal. All within a broad national strategy in the context of the exceptionality highlighted by Enel representatives in the recent debate in Parliament. Be that as it may, the political question is intertwined with the industrial one. More precisely with a development idea. With the ability to listen to those who - now they are the Sardinians - have so far been excluded from benefits and enjoyments reserved for others. Coal, just to remind you, is in the history of the island, but you have to get out of it and nobody dares to doubt it.

The Sardinian energy future also has other nuances, not least that of costs. The Pd MPs want to know from Di Maio, Toninelli, Costa if there are conditions for giving Sardinian citizens liquefied natural gas at a price in line with that of Italian gas. A wish, more than a simple question and only to contain any costs borne by future users. Times? They must be quick because the choices must converge with the industrial options. Manca and his colleagues are very explicit and therefore solicit an institutional discussion table "to clarify whether and how it is intended to proceed in adequately supporting the phase out of coal by 2025, avoiding generating distortions on the market".

Arera is also in the game, oriented towards providing a specific and further tariff area for Sardinia and favoring the diffusion of methane. All industrial operation would fall back to the island for a number of years. This does not convince the industrialists who are on the alert. President Alberto Scanu was explicit. He thinks that with this direction, the consolidated national solidarity for major works will disappear. A warning in the ear of the M5S which holds the three ministries most involved and the face of Di Maio. If infrastructures are to be made, the costs are well distributed. The agencies reported even harsher statements by Maurizio De Pascale, president of Confindustria Sud Sardegna.

"It is absurd that someone would think of passing on the costs of the distribution network to Sardinian families and businesses. We are faced with blatant discrimination against Sardinia“. In a nutshell, says the manager, over 3 billion euros to be withdrawn from the pockets of the inhabitants of Sardinia. Many actors who do not let us glimpse easy days. With energy giants with excellent financial resources (moreover owned by the State) who do not lose optimism to see a historical gap overcome and new infrastructures from north to south of the island.
