Energy: the third Italian biorefinery will be created in Livorno. Eni is ready for the reconversion of the site

The third Italian biorefinery will be built in Livorno. Eni will build it with an investment of 400 million euros. In essence, one of Italy's historic oil sites will be reconverted and the project will be very similar to the one already implemented in Porto Marghera and Gela. For Livorno the environmental impact assessment was presented in November and yesterday by the President of the Region  Eugenio Giani met a delegation from the company.

The Livorno plants will also enter the reconversion strategy that Eni has set up with a view to decarbonisation. These days there is a lot of talk about the company managed by Claudio Descalzi about the Mattei plan for Africa, however also in Italy the company continues towards production regeneration objectives. Carbon neutrality by 2050 with more biofuels? Yes. With the Livorno plant fully operational within i next seven years Italy should place 5 million tons of non-polluting fuels on the market. From a commercial point of view, the markets are very interested in purchasing low-impact products. The new refining with advanced technologies does not emit toxic substances.

The role of Tuscany

President Giani, as we were saying, spoke yesterday on the project under environmental assessment by the Region. “After years of uncertainties, various hypotheses of reindustrialisation including the sale to other properties, Eni finally sends the right signal to confirm the strategic role of the Livorno plant” he said. "The company's choice will be able to benefit from an even more competitive territorial context in light of the huge regional investments in local infrastructure." In this sense, Tuscany is playing a significant role in the national energy scenario: from geothermal energy to the issue of the LNG terminal Piombino, now at the reconversion of Livorno

In 2023, 200 million euros were allocated to the port area for the Darsena Europa and 20 million for the strengthening of the interport. There reconversion will affirm a circular economy. The plants will produce hydrogenated biofuel and sustainable biofuel for aviation. From an employment point of view there should be no repercussions. Eni's commitment is to maintain the current employment levels of the plant and related industries. We just have to leave.
