Energy, Europe does not decide and Italy comes forward

After the flop of the Italian G7, Europe needs to find a balance between renewable and traditional sources to protect investments and jobs, overcoming the US inaction, dictated by Trump, in the fight against climate change. New and challenging proposals are needed, such as mandatory environmental taxation for products that do not use energy sources from polluting sources, while still protecting less impactful traditional sources

Will Europe find an energy governance that satisfies the member countries? After flop of the Italian G7, the question found an initial response in a Senate resolution which calls for the modification of some directives in force. Italy is the country most interested in a substantial sharing of strategies and objectives.

The minister calenda he said it several times, and he certainly didn't expect the USA to maintain the G7 at our home country principle "trumpist” of no fight against climate change, no renunciation of old fuels. Yet the future is played out on other scenarios. In Europe there is an urgent need for a synthesis, for a medium-term balance between renewable and traditional sources to protect investments and jobs.

In the background dangerous forward runs like those of the M5S for renewables to the bitter end. How did he do it Cricket to write that by 2030 everything will be like this, then remains a mystery. Renewable energies, it is true, are at the heart of strict industrial strategies and the traditional ones are resisting due to the historical contribution they have given and continue to give to the European economy. For this reason, the Industry and Environment commissions of the Senate have called for an interactive process between the European Commission and the Member States on the integrated national plans for energy and climate.

It does not matter if Trump it doesn't fit: at least the EU works to improve energy and climate change targets. Italy wants to get busy. We are on the eve of a new energy strategy which will also have to correct tax distortions and hidden incentives for fossil fuels.
Europe on its own cannot stand still with the signing of climate agreements COP 21 in Paris. It can act by making it obligatory for the member countries - say the Italian senators - an environmental taxation in favor of products that do not use energy from polluting sources. It is a suggestion that would greatly favor renewable energies.

However, it is not possible to close with the past in a few moves. It would mean chasing dreams and not taking into account the complex system of traditional energy production and supply. The less impactful sources such as gas must be protected, says the Italian resolution. And the large inter-European transport projects with the commitment of large Italian groups are linked to this source.

Risky to predict the weight of the Italian document to the European vagueness. The positive fact for now is that the sensitivity shown by two parliamentary committees goes to the heart of a planetary problem that involves millions of European citizens and their right to have ensured energy useful for the development of their cities.
