Energy: Europe takes action on hydrogen. Two steps to grow. Italy fifth in industrial patents

Hydrogen energy is advancing rapidly in Europe. The European Commission has adopted two provisions to precisely define the concept of renewable hydrogen. A step forward that has been awaited for months, where it is specified that "liquid fuels such as ammonia, methanol or electric fuels are considered renewables of non-biological origin if produced from renewable hydrogen". With the clarification, the Commission thus accelerates the objectives to 2030. By that date we should have, in fact, 10 million tons produced "at home" and 10 million imported. The two approved acts are linked to a single purpose and simultaneously allow for measure the amount of hydrogen produced in each country and stimulate investmentthe. There is, therefore, greater certainty for investors on which supply chains to focus on within the REPowerEU. Within the next 7 years, green fuel should account for 14% of electricity consumption on a European scale.

Hydrogen will have to spend funds from the PNRR

Hundreds of companies are already launched towards these goals. On the one hand, their investments contribute to lowering harmful emissions into the atmosphere. On the other hand they are creating a parallel chain (although still a minority) to that of fossil fuels. In this field Italy is recovering the shyness of the past, when only a minority was talking about green hydrogen. Today it is in fifth place in Europe for the number of patents filed and companies are preparing to exploit these intellectual resources. In the PNRR there are, then, 2 billion to be spent on green technology research. The Regions are in turn spending the 500 million euros available to regenerate the areas through production sites industrial decommissioned. It is an interesting game given that it is estimated that there are 9 square km of abandoned areas along the whole Peninsula.

Hydrogen Expo in Piacenza in May

"Exploiting the potential provided by hydrogen is a key element of the European strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050," he said Antonio Campinos, President of the European Patent Office, the European Patent Office. "But if we want hydrogen to play an important role in reducing CO2 emissions and combating climate change, it is urgently necessary to innovate a wide range of technologies to bring these inventions to market". We will know more about it at the Hydrogen Expo scheduled in Piacenza from 17 to 19 May next. An appointment on which companies focus very much precisely to have solutions that save money on the energy bill. Whether or not we are on the verge of real change we will predictably see it in the next couple of years. At the moment the government seems to believe it too which, as is known, did not elaborate the PNRR with the appropriations mentioned above. The Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, he recently visited a historic company – Sapio – which has been engaged in the production of hydrogen and oxygen for 100 years. The company, which also has offices abroad, has set up an integrated system of products and services for those approaching renewable sources. Obviously it can be an example for other companies, but with the government to support them.
