The tender for the first twenty plants to be built in the area has been launched. Another call is planned for next fall. Ferraris, FS: «From 2024 we will produce energy for our trains, with benefits for the community»

Energy: Ferrovie dello Stato launches a 130 million tender for the construction of twenty photovoltaic plants

Ferservizi, a company that manages the sale and leasing of the real estate assets of the FS Group, Has published a call for tenders in the European Official Journal for the executive design and construction of winds photovoltaic systems for a total value of 130 million euro. The systems will be installed in the areas owned by the FS Italiane Group adjacent to the railway electricity substations.

FS's goal: to produce its own energy for trains from 2024

The objective of Ferrovie dello Stato is to produce its own energy for trains through green sources such as announced by the managing director Luigi Ferraris Business plan 2022-2031. The 2022-2031 strategic plan of FS aims at reach a production of energy from the photovoltaic equal to about 10% than that currently produced throughout Italy by solar energy plants, thus offering a concrete contribution to the country's green transition.

The installation of the systems will allow FS to weigh less on the country system in national procurement from foreign suppliers and to play an active role in the challenge of the ecological transition. Already in 2027, according to plan, FS will cover 40% of its energy needs, producing up to 2,6 TWh, with an investment of over 1,6 billion euros.

Photovoltaic systems to be built throughout the national territory

Il gang was launched last January 9 and is composed of four lots covering thewhole Italian territory where the specific areas owned by RFI (leader of the FS Group's Infrastructure Pole) and Anas (the road company of the Infrastructure Pole) will be identified. Overall, areas have been surveyed for 30 million square meters no longer functional to the railway service that can be used for new purposes.

Il first lot, worth 20 million, involves the construction of photovoltaic plants in three regions of Northern Italy: Ostiglia and Padua in Veneto, Strassoldo and Pontebba in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Chivasso in Piedmont; The according to includes the construction of plants in four central-southern regions, for a value of 40 million: Arezzo and Grosseto (Tuscany), Santa Severa (Lazio), Avezzano (Abruzzo), Benevento and Contursi (Campania); The third batch, worth 40 million, includes four towns in Puglia: Foggia, Brindisi, Nasisi and Lecce; L'last, worth 30 million, will cover the areas of Cassano allo Ionio, Contesse, Mileto, Saline Joniche (Calabria) and Agira (Sicily).

It is planned to launch a other notice next autumn, for another forty plants. With the future systems installed, the FS Group will be able to supply as early as 2024 one power of over 300 megawatts with the goal of reaching 2 gigawatts in 2027.

The plants will be connected to the railway network so as to be able to use the energy produced for traction of the trains.

Ferraris, FS: becoming one of the major producers of renewable energy to contribute to energy saving.

THECEO of Railways, Luigi Ferraris explained the need for FS to become an energy self-producer: “We like state Railways, we move the country and we are big energy consumers. We are the first in Italy, with the 2% of national consumption. So we have a great one responsibility with the aim of contributing to energy saving. In this sense, we have set ourselves the goal of becoming energy self-producers, which will allow us to become one of the largest producers of renewable energy. We have already launched a tender this year and from 2024 we will start generating energy. It is an investment that in addition to producing an important business advantage, will represent a significant benefit for the whole community".

Ferrovie dello Stato aims at advance by ten years the date of 2050 indicated by the European Union for the achievement of the carbon neutrality.
