Energy, Ernesto Magorno: Italy energy hub of Europe? Meloni is committed to new projects

"Italy can be the energy hub of Europe. The new government should work for this”. In addition to the decisions of the Council of Europe, our country is in a position to favor the energy transition of all of Europe. Ernest the Great, former Senator of Italia Viva and member of Copasir insists on the strategy that the Meloni government should follow to overcome the energy crisis. The analysis starts from 2021 to arrive almost at the end of 2022 without a definitive national orientation. The Draghi government and its support measures are now just a memory. Meloni, however, has said he will defer to the decisions of the Council of Europe. "As Copasir – explains Magorno – we worked hard on the issue of energy crisis and we have worked on this dossier even outside the real emergency, which coincided with the outbreak of war in Ukraine”. The signs of the crisis had already appeared in the middle of 2021. As far as the EU is concerned, beyond the measures adopted, it is absolutely the unity of the member countries is necessary for a European energy security plan. But we cannot forget that our country can play a leading role by applying for the role of hub energy for the whole EU. This is for relations and links with countries bordering the Mediterranean. After all, they are topics analyzed by Copasir in his relationships.

Energy, Magorno: new projects must look to the Mediterranean

"Italy has a peculiar geographical position and the countries of the Mediterranean area are now candidates to become new points of reference, adds the Senator". Operational solutions? “The new executive will have to insist on the possibility of making Italy the hub of Europe. For example, support the project for the construction of a Spain-Italy gas pipeline between Barcelona and Livorno, which would allow, among other things, the influx of gas introduced into the network by the vast and currently underutilized system of Spanish regasification terminals”. But the LNG that comes from the Americas costs more. The regasifiers – replies Magorno – could be supplied with that LNG coming from the USA and Argentina.

Gas: Double the Tap and restart the EastMed-Poseidon

Even more can be done. “For example The doubling of the transport capacity of the Tap and the restart of the project EastMed-Poseidon which would give rise to new supplies of gas from the East". The time will come to discuss with the new executive and understand in which direction we want to go. But Giorgia Meloni it will also be called upon to evaluate investments in renewable energy, mainly solar energy, in the countries of North Africa. There - according to Italia Viva - electricity can be produced to be used for the generation of green hydrogen. Meanwhile we are dealing with the dear bills on which every political force has its own recipe.

“The next two years will be decisive for making up for the higher costs for households and businesses, from a European perspective and with adequate national resources as well,” replies Magorno. In reality he sees only one way: to activate a strategic and Western autonomy by elaborating a specific one national plan that allows all consumers to contain costs and use them carefully and purposefully. Some important investments are already underway and must be supported. We have to take into account the state budget and theinflation running. ” Italy has the necessary resources to make this transition quickly with the aim – I repeat – of becoming theEuropean energy hub and Mediterranean. This can allow us to get rid of dependence on Russia, improve environmental conditions, highlight our strategic role in the Mediterranean and in Europe.” The crisis, if faced with determination and awareness, can even become an opportunity.
