Energy and the environment: Europe does not abandon Italy

The money from the Life Program arrives and Rome must make good use of it. Support for energy efficiency, good practices and initiatives in small municipalities. A virtuous economic circle of around 430 million euros.

Energy and the environment: Europe does not abandon Italy

However bitter the controversy these days with the EU over the budget law, Italy is not left to itself. Not yet, at least. In fact, the European Commission granted Italy 75,3 million euros from the Life program for the transition to a new environmental and energy model. It is part of the total allocation of 243 million euros for all countries. The money allocated to Italy, against the calls for tenders at the beginning of the year, will have to be well spent. Each for their part must remember that the multi-year Life is one of the cornerstone programs for the new environmental strategy.

In Rome they will have to concentrate on 30 projects already in the field. Increase in the circulation of electric cars, stimulus to the conversion of equipment that uses polluting fuels, reduction of waste production. Solids will also have to be used in small municipalities, to support information campaigns, explains Brussels. Those realities that have not yet been invaded by smog and climate-altering agents cannot be left behind, with little funds they can prevent the upheavals of the metropolis. The Union has estimated that the 243 million euros will stimulate further investment, especially private. There will be a total balance of around 430 million for 142 new projects in the various countries. It is also interesting to examine the macro items divided into 196,2 million for environmental efficiency, nature, biodiversity, governance and 46,8 for works of mitigation, adaptation, management of climate change. Let us also remember that the general framework of Life are the 2030 goals on energy and climate.

Unfortunately, Italy is still seen as the symbol of disorderly waste management. He will be able to demonstrate his ability to use new technologies for waste treatment by building plants powered by renewable energy. The recent criticisms by environmental associations of government measures on these issues, if they do not irritate ministers, can be translated into an incentive to do better. The LIFE program was born for this. Either we move forward in a shared direction or it makes no sense to insist and spend money. The money is used to move towards an efficient economy with low carbon emissions and to counter "degradation of ecosystems".

It is true that European environmental legislation is subject to vetoes and negotiations between states which often show incomprehensible and harmful limits. But the general principles regarding the environment, the green economy and the climate are valid and robust. On the other hand, we could not even explain the large investments that European companies have made in recent years to stay on the market and not recede from the virtuous rankings. A direction that must be supported without hesitation, especially when the balance sheets of companies have heavy items on sustainability and the market rewards the best ones. It is no coincidence that the Life 2018-2020 proposals requested by the EU have capitalized on pilot projects, good practices, information projects, awareness raising and dissemination of environmental issues. On everything we need a solid political guide. Better if he doesn't claim to be a sovereignist.
