The CEO of Enel, Francesco Starace has been confirmed on the board of directors of the United Nations Global Compact for the next three years (2018-2021). The manager, who had already been appointed for the first three-year term in May 2015, is the only representative from the Electric Utilities sector and the only Italian among the 21 members of the new Board. Since 2004, Enel itself has been part of the Global Compact, which since 2011 has been among the companies included in the LEAD Global Compact, which brings together the main world leaders in the private sector in the field of sustainability.

“Today's society is faced with very pressing issues and challenges. I am very proud to be a member of the Board of Directors of the United Nations Global Compact which, through its vision and activity, not only draws a clear roadmap for the sustainable development of the planet, but also enables companies and communities to contribute to the resolution of these challenges. As a global community we have the resources and know-how to achieve all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, but we must work together and quickly to map out the path ahead of us. I thank the Secretary General of the United Nations for the opportunity he has given me to continue working towards the realization of this important goal,” said Francesco Starace, Enel's Chief Executive Officer.

The purpose of the UN Global Compact is to help businesses align their strategies and activities with its ten principles on human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption, promoting awareness and entrepreneurial action in support of the Agenda 2030 of the United Nations for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Board of Directors is the main governing body of the UN Global Compact, it advises the Secretary General and contributes to defining the direction of the Global Compact, approving policies and strategies and monitoring their implementation.
