Enel queen of revenues, Eni of profits: here is the ranking of the main Italian companies according to Mediobanca

In the study on the main Italian companies, the Mediobanca Study Area analyzed the financial statements for the 2021 financial year of 3.442 companies. Generali excels among insurance companies, Intesa beats Unicredit in the banking sector. Here are all the results

Enel queen of revenues, Eni of profits: here is the ranking of the main Italian companies according to Mediobanca

Enel is first in terms of revenues, Eni queen of profits. Poste Italiane wins for number of employees, Generali is unrivaled among insurance companies, while Intesa Sanpaolo beats Unicredit among banks. This is what can be seen from the 57th edition of the study on the main Italian companies made byMediobanca Studies Area based on the 2021 financial statements of 3.442 companies.

Italian companies: the classifications of turnover, profits and losses

The top twenty positions of the turnover ranking 2021 they are occupied by nine companies under public control, five under Italian private control and six under foreign ownership. Nine belong to the energy sector (oil or electricity), six to manufacturing and five to infrastructure management or services. Of the 1.763 companies in the ranking, 227 are those with sales exceeding one billion, an increase compared to the 187 in the last edition.

In the first place there is Enel with revenues of 84,1 billion. Second Eni with 76,6, third gse with 54,4 billion. Dominating the 2021 turnover ranking of industry and services are three public energy-oil groups, the only ones that have achieved sales of more than 50 billion euros. It is only from fourth place onwards that we find companies from other sectors. In fourth position, in fact, there is the manufacture with FCA Italy (21,9 billion), followed by services with Telecom Italy (15,1 billion). The mechanics are confirmed sixth Leonardo (14,1 billion), while rising by two notches Prysmian, seventh with sales of 12,7 billion euros, which it undermines state Railways, eighth with 11,7 billion in turnover.

The energy women earn seven Edison e A2Arespectively ninth and tenth with revenues of 11,7 and 11. billion. 

They follow:

11: Ivy (10,5 billion);

12: Edition (9,8 billion); 

13: Poste Italiane (8,9 billion);

14: Saras – Sardinian Refineries (8,6 billion);

15: Esselunga (8,5 billion);

16: Marcegaglia Holding (8 billion);

17: Parmalat (8 billion);

18: Kuwait Petroleum Italy (7,6 billion)

19: It Italian (7,4 billion) 

20: Saipem (6,9 billion).

“Overall, seventeen companies out of the top twenty achieved a growth in turnover, both due to the higher prices of raw materials and the increase in volumes sold as well as the effect of some M&A operations”, underlines Mediobanca. 

Moving on to the net results, this time the first two positions are reversed. Eni is the queen of profits, having closed 2021 with 5,8 billion euros, after the loss of 8,6 billion in 2020. In second place is Enel with 3,2 billion (+22,2%): Bronze medal for Edition which, with 1,6 billion, recovers the 2020 loss of 320 million euros. Poste Italiane closed at 1.578 million euro (+30,7%). 

In the far more negative loss ranking, instead we find in the first position telecom italy, with 8,7 billion euros, or 57,2% of turnover. “The result discounts the effects of the write-down of domestic goodwill for 4,1 billion euro and the write-off, equal to 3,8 billion, of deferred tax assets. Followed by Saipem with 2,5 billion (35,9% of sales) and FCA Italy with 1,5 billion (7% of turnover).

Employee ranking

The group with the largest number of employees is Poste Italiane with 121.423 units, down 2,6% on 2020. In second place is state Railways with 81.906 (+0,6%), employees, followed at a distance by Edition (68.922, +19,6%), Enel (66.279, -0,7%) and Leonardo (50.413, +1,1%). Just below the threshold of 50 thousand units Telecom Italy (47.930, -2,4%).

“Also considering the companies that rotate in the orbit of the Agnelli included in the ranking, the aggregate personnel employed is equal to approximately 67 thousand units”, Mediobanca points out.

In terms of gender gap, Poste Italiane is also distinguished by the high number of employed women employees: 64,4 thousand or 53% of the total. Even higher incidence, equal to 90%, for Calzedonia Holding (approximately 36,7 thousand) and Almaviva – The Italian Innovation Company, 63,2% (approximately 28,2 thousand).

The ranking of banks and insurance companies

In 2021, the ranking of the top 20 Italian banks (based on total tangible assets) will not undergo significant changes, with Intesa Sanpaolo first at 1.059,5 billion (+6,5% compared to the 2020 figure) ahead of Unicredit (914,5 billion, -1,6%) e CDP – Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (412,9 billion, +0,6%). “The first two banks have tangible assets equal to 111% of Italy's GDP”, underlines Mediobanca.

In the insurance sector, Generali maintains absolute dominance of the Top10 of groups with gross premiums which, thanks to its multinational structure and the full consolidation of the Cattolica Assicurazioni group in 2021, amount to 74,3 billion or 57% of the total achieved by the entire sector. They follow the group Vita Post (17,9 billion) e Unipol (12,3 billion).

The dynamic enterprises of the IV Capitalism

Mediobanca also analyzes the 26 the dynamic societies of the Fourth Capitalism Italian, i.e. those in the intermediate size range in the Italian economic system, which have grown in terms of turnover and profitability both compared to 2020 and compared to pre-pandemic levels. 

These are companies that in 2021 achieved an increase in sales of at least 20% on 2020 and 40% on 2019 and an incidence of the result on turnover of at least 4% in 2019 and 2021. “These virtuous companies are been sorted on the basis of a Global Performance Indicator calculated in order to analyze their income, capital and efficiency profiles”, Mediobanca points out.

Those with the best indicators are concentrated in the first ten positions: five are based in the North West (four in Lombardy and one in Piedmont), three in the North East (two in Emilia-Romagna and one in Veneto) and two in the South and Islands ( one in Campania and one in Sicily).

In this special ranking we find first place Copan Italy, world leader in the production of swabs for bacteriology and systems for molecular biology, which in 2021 achieved a turnover of 395 million euros (+179,2% compared to 2019). Its exports account for 84,2% of the turnover. The Ebit Margin is equal to 36,9%.

In second place there is Techno probe, manufacturer of "probe cards", hi-tech devices for testing the functioning of chips during their construction process for the telephony, computer and automotive sectors. The 2021 turnover, equal to 392 million euros, recorded an increase of 104,7% compared to 2019, thanks to the acquisition of new market shares. Third Arthur Willow, which produces hinges for furniture, and last year recorded revenues of 145 million (+58,9%). Fourth and fifth place respectively for Sicit Group (82 million, +44,3%) e U Power Group (230,1 million euros +44% compared to 2019). They follow Omer (between 2019 and 2021 turnover, equal to 54,3 million, increased by 75,1%) and Novabell (76,6 million euros +40,6% compared to the pre-pandemic period). Closing the top ten:  Drawing mill A. Mauri and Sons (sales at 127,6 million, +58,5%) Queen of San Marzano by Antonio Romano (184,6 million +112,6% on 2019) e Immerfin (402,8 million, +41,4% on 2019).
