Enel launches the first intelligent Italian network Smart Grids in Isernia

Enel Distribuzione has launched the first installation in Italy and one of the first in Europe of a Smart Grid in the Isernia area. This is a technology that will make it possible to optimize the bidirectional flow of electricity deriving from renewable sources on low and medium voltage networks. The total investment for the pilot project amounts to 10 million euros and thousands of customers will be involved in the project.

The creation of an intelligent system on the distribution network is due to the growing diffusion of distributed generation which, being obtained mainly from renewable sources, is subject to fluctuations due to weather conditions or the alternation of night and day.

The project is part of the experimental initiatives that Enel is implementing in the context of intelligent electricity networks (Smart Grids), thanks also to the incentives of the Electricity and Gas Authority (AEEG). In fact, Enel has a ten-year restructuring plan underway for the entire distribution network (more than one million kilometres) coordinated with the programs for the diffusion of Smart Grids launched by the European Union.
