Enel innovates with sport: here is MotoE, the first all-electric Moto Gp

This time no roar of the engines but speed, competition and fun are guaranteed. The first starts in 2019 all-electric motorcycle championship recognized by the Federation with the name of FIM Enel MotoE World Cup.

The new electric motorcycle produced entirely by the Italian company Energica Motor Company was presented in the Roman setting of the Farneto Workshops. It will be entrusted to the private MotoGP teams who will be responsible for selecting the riders for the next world championship. The performance of the electric racing car developed by Energica bodes well: from 0 to 100 meters in three seconds, a maximum speed of 250 km/h for a power of up to 110 kW.

Motorcycling is a highly receptive and cutting-edge sport, given its global reach and the number of enthusiasts who follow the races around the world. Precisely on this theme Starace wanted to underline the scope of the new collaboration: “The energy revolution and the path towards electric mobility must not be considered long-term objectives for an unidentified future. The process has already begun, but the biggest obstacle lies precisely in communicating the message. For this reason we think that using the world championship as a vehicle for transmitting our vision is a winning and innovative strategy".

The partnership between Enel and Dorna (exclusive holder of the commercial and television rights to the world championship) confirms, as stated by Enel's CEO Francesco Starace, “the commitment to the constant promotion of the development of electric mobility at a global level. It is a natural evolution that strengthens our position as Official Power Partner of Formula E, announced in 2016”.

The collaboration will be made competitive by the Enel X advanced energy services division: fast charge methodologies, supply and accumulation of green energy, personnel and dedicated infrastructures. MotoE's electricity system, highly complex given its innovative nature, will be supported by Enel's intelligent energy management and by renewable energies generated locally through latest generation photovoltaic systems or made available by local distribution networks.

A specially designed mobile battery charger capable of fully charging a motorcycle in less than 30 minutes will be connected to Enel's smart e-mobility platform to optimize the charging process. In this way it will be possible to continuously monitor the charging stations. It will be possible to recharge the bikes both in the pits, connected to the grid, and in any other part of the circuit, in battery mode, through a mobile charger with integrated storage capacity.

2018 will be a fundamental year for the development of new electric motorcycles, during which technical improvements will be applied (also thanks to the acceptance tests that will be carried out by world champion Loris Capirossi) and communication and sponsorship programs for the next world championship will be launched. To date, the idea is to have the electric motorcycles race between the MotoGp Warm Up and the start of the Moto3, so as to involve all the spectators present on the circuits.

Satisfaction also for the president of the International Motorcycling Federation, Vito Ippolito: "the FIM has had a sustainability program for 25 years, an aspect that for us represents a fundamental pillar of the future of motorcycling and of the evolution in the field of alternative energies".

Enel will also be the Sustainable Power Partner of MotoGP, in a project shared with Dorna Sport. Carmelo Ezpeleta, Dorna's number one and historical figure in the MotoGP world, declared: "entering the world of electric mobility is an obligatory choice towards the future".

On the sidelines of the presentation, Starace left a comment on the future elections on 4 March: “It is positive that the issue of electric mobility is an electoral element that brings all parties into agreement. Before asking politicians for concrete action, it is we who must take important steps forward, completing our infrastructure plan by 2021".
