Enel, photovoltaic plant in South Africa

Enel's largest solar plant in South Africa goes into production. Through the subsidiary Enel Green Power, the Paleisheuwel photovoltaic plant in the Western Cape province of South Africa was completed and connected to the grid. This is Enel's largest plant in operation in the country. Paleisheuwel has an installed capacity of 82,5 megawatts and is capable of generating more than 153 gigawatt hours a year, equal to the annual energy consumption of around 48 South African households. Thanks to the plant, more than 140 thousand tons of CO2 are avoided.

The photovoltaic plant, explains the press release, has a twenty-year supply contract with the South African utility Eskom, under the Renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme. Enel's South African renewable energy subsidiary EGP RSA currently operates the 10-megawatt Upington wind farm in the Northern Cape province and has a further 430 megawatts under construction. Furthermore, in 2015 Enel was awarded a further five wind projects for a total of 705 megawatts. Once all these projects are completed, Enel's installed capacity in the country will reach 1,2 Gigawatts.
