Enel GP-Novartis: agreement on 100% renewable energy

Enel Green Power has signed an agreement with the pharmaceutical multinational Novartis for 78 MW of renewable energy. The agreement will last 10 years.

Technically this is a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement which will become operational from January 2022 and will help Novartis achieve its goals in terms of 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality in its operations in Europe by 2025.

Accordingly, the energy supplied under this agreement will be produced by TICO's 179,9 MW Zaragoza (Spain) wind farm and will enable Novartis to avoid the emission of about 96.400 tons of CO into the atmosphere2 every year.

“Novartis is a leader in environmental and sustainability issues. At Enel Green Power, we are very proud to be a strategic partner and the Green Enabler of a part of an important milestone in their journey towards carbon neutrality of the company's operations and supply chain,” said Javier Vaquerizo, director of the Global Commercial Office of Enel Green Power. “With this agreement, Novartis is showcasing what pan-European VPPAs can do for companies fighting climate change across the continent.”

Montse Montaner, chief sustainability officer of Novartis, lets know that. “Energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions are the cornerstones of our strategy to reduce emissions. We are proud to join forces with Enel Green Power and other like-minded partners on our path towards environmental sustainability.”

The agreement between Novartis and the renewable energy subsidiary of the Enel group is part of the commitment that the pharmaceutical company has made on environmental sustainability "The company also aims to stimulate sustainability through its operations, as well as those of its suppliers, and has set ambitious goals in order to minimize its impact on the climate, waste production and water resources. Novartis is committed to using resources efficiently and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which produce effects on the climate,” reads the joint statement of the two groups.
