Enel and Emilia-Romagna together again for hydroelectricity

Agreement between the Region and the electricity company for the renovation of the dams - It is necessary to accumulate water with a low environmental impact for various uses

Enel and Emilia-Romagna together again for hydroelectricity

THEEmilia Romagna for Enel Green Power confirms itself as a virtuous Region for hydroelectric production, with 28 plants that satisfy the energy demand of over 2 million households. A new agreement between the Region and the Company starts the restructuring of the dams in the Municipality of Monchio delle Corti, Lago Verde and Lago Ballano. They will produce clean energy for both agricultural and household use. This is how we accelerate on renewables, enhancing a sector that for the International Environment Agency risks being the forgotten giant of the energy transition.

Le Emilian dams were built at the beginning of the twentieth century and push the Rigoso plant. With the new jobs, the invaded will have a ca capacity of about one million cubic meters in total. Construction feature that has also obtained the approval of the Ministry of Infrastructures. In detail, the dam of Lake Ballano, in addition to reviewing safety standards, will have a lake level rise to 1.340 meters. For that of Lago Verde the recovery of the reservoir will reach approximately 1.500 meters, with the consolidation of the foundation with anti-seismic criteria, and here too new safety standards. The environmental impact will be low, guaranteed by Enel and the Region.

It is precisely starting from the contained environmental impacts that hydroelectric power must be encouraged. In order to achieve its 2030 objectives, Italy must increase the current 25% of installed power. A small step forward has been made with the Simplifications decree, but the Pnrr will have to establish how and how much to put on the net. Most of the plants are located in Lombardy, Piedmont and Trentino, where, unfortunately, they are affected by climate change and the accumulation of water.

For this, said the climatologist Luca Mercalli, “it is necessary to imagine strategies on the accumulation of water in view of its multiple use. It is needed not only for energy, not only for agriculture, not only in the form of flood control and lamination, but for all of this together”. For years, Italy has been at the forefront of this renewable source, the oldest and most widespread of all. Now it is called to raise.
