Enel starts construction of maxi wind farm in Greece

The Kafireas wind farm, on the island of Evia, will have a total installed capacity of 154 MW and will be able to generate approximately 483 GWh per year – The Ampere project has also been launched which aims to create a production line in the 3SUN Catania plant the creation of high-efficiency silicon heterojunction bifacial photovoltaic modules.

Enel starts construction of maxi wind farm in Greece

Enel, through its Greek renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power Hellas, has started construction of the Kafireas wind farm, in the southern part of the Greek island Evia, in the municipality of Karistos. Once completed, the new facility will have a total installed capacity of 154 MW and will be the largest wind farm in the country.

"The start of construction work on Kafireas is a new step forward in consolidating Enel's presence in Greece, where we have decades of experience in the renewable energy sector," said Antonio Cammisecra, head of Enel Green Power. “With this new plant, we are not only committed to supplying green and sustainable energy to the country, but also to promoting the social and economic development of local communities, adopting the method of creating shared value in the construction and management of this wind farm complex”.

Enel will invest approximately 300 million euros in the construction of Kafireas, which is expected to start operating in the first quarter of 2019 and will sell the electricity produced under a XNUMX-year supply agreement (PPA) with the Greek market operator LAGIE.

Kafireas will be equipped with a high voltage (150kV) interconnection line with the continental grid, including overhead, submarine and underground cables, and will be able to generate around 483 GWh per year, equal to the annual energy demand of around 129 Greek families, avoiding the emission of almost 433 tons of CO2 per year into the atmosphere.

EGPH already operates two wind farms in the municipality of Karistos, Iliolousti I (7,5 MW) and Iliolousti II (9 MW). The company is the leader in Greece in the ownership and management of energy plants from renewable sources, with 308 MW of installed wind, hydro and solar power.

Important news also on Italy. It took place in Catania at the headquarters of 3SUN, the photovoltaic panel factory owned by Enel Green Power, the meeting of Ampere – Automated photovoltaic cell and Module industrial Production to regain and secure European Renewable Energy market – in the presence of representatives of all partners.

The project is funded by the European research and innovation program Horizon 2020 European Call LCE-09-2016-2017, aimed at increasing the competitiveness of European photovoltaic industries. Ampere aims to develop a fully automated pilot line for the production of modules based on an innovative high efficiency technology. The amount of the loan for the consortium amounts to 14 million euros (of which 8,3 for 3SUN and 0,5 for Enel Green Power) intended for the acquisition and installation of automated equipment at the 3SUN plant, for the construction of a production line capable of manufacturing cells using heterojunction technology and, in a subsequent phase, the extension of the site's production capacity.
