Enel, new digital meters on the way: 4,3 billion investment in Italy

"I'm 32 million second generation meters Enel Open Meter which we will install in Italy by mid-2021, to replace the first generation ones. The investment amounts to 2,7 billion only for this first massive phase, then we will reach approx 4,3 billion overall with subsequent installations. The CEO of Enel said so, Francesco Starace, presenting today in Rome the group's new project, which overall envisages the installation of around 41 million 2.0 meters over a 15-year period. "250 companies are involved and more than 4 people will work on this activity, which will be concentrated above all in the next two years", added the CEO.

Also present at the appointment was the prime minister, Paolo Gentiloni, who spoke of a “great opportunity for an innovative investment in our country. Second generation meters will allow for save between 2 and 6% of electricity consumption and Enel's 4,3 billion investment will be joined by those of the municipal companies that choose to use the new devices. In this way we will arrive at an investment of around 6 billion".

Starace recalled that “from 2014 to 2016 Enel invested 5,5 billion in Italy, 24% of its investments for growth worldwide. From 2017 to 2019 – continued the CEO – we will invest another 6,7 billion, reaching 32% of the global share. And this without counting the investments of Open Fiber”.

For Gentiloni this is “a positive signal for our economy: in this crucial phase we are seeing signs of recovery and we must accompany them above all in the internal market with investments and new initiatives. Growth and environmental sustainability not only can but must go forward together”.

The new Enel Open Meters, which replace those installed since 2001, provide the customer consumption information in near real time, thus allowing you to program the withdrawal of energy and therefore save. It will be possible to access - also via web and mobile app - the consumption and injection curves of the last six months. By sending the seller more detailed measurement data, the invoices will be more accurate and change supplier or header supply will become easier.

On the commercial side, the most important novelty will be the possible introduction on the market of "prepaid" offers, indicated above all for those who own a second home or for the youngest, attentive to the energy budget and at the same time casual with the new IT tools.

Finally - explains Enel - the new meters will make it more timely the repair of faults on the low voltage network, thanks to the ability of the devices to autonomously notify the distributor of supplies that are out of power.

“Today a world of possibilities is opening up for factories, offices, shopping centres, workshops and homes – Starace continued – It is a real leap in performance, which makes Italy the most advanced country in the world in this sector ”.

Early afternoon Enel's stock on the Stock Exchange gains 0,9%, to 4,942 euros.
