Enel: work on hydroelectric plant in Peru is underway

Once completed, this run-of-the-river hydroelectric plant will have an installed capacity of 20 MW and will be able to generate over 130 GWh per year – Enel's investment in the construction of the plant will be approximately 50 million US dollars

Enel, through its renewables subsidiary Enel Green Power Peru, has started construction of the 20 MW run-of-river hydroelectric plant Ayanunga, located in the Monzón district, in the Huánuco region of Peru.

“Peru is a key market for Enel Green Power and the start of construction of Ayanunga represents a further step forward in consolidating our presence in the country's renewables sector,” commented Antonio Cammisecra, head of Enel Green Power. “Once completed, the 20 MW of this plant will add to the 780 MW of hydroelectric plants that the Enel Group already manages in Peru. Our goal is to lead the development of the renewable energy sector in the country, while creating shared value for the communities that live near our projects”.

Enel's investment in the construction of Ayanunga is approximately 50 million US dollars and is part of the investments outlined in the Group's current strategic plan. The project is supported by a XNUMX-year power purchase agreement signed with the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines.

Ayanunga's contribution to the Peruvian energy system will be equal to over 130 GWh per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of over 105 Peruvian families. Ayanunga is expected to enter service by the end of 2018 and, once fully operational, will avoid the emission of over 62.800 tonnes of CO2 per year.

In line with the Creating Shared Value (CSV) model adopted by the Group to reconcile business development with the needs of local communities, EGPP has launched a CSV plan aimed at promoting income generation opportunities in areas close to the plant. The activities include training initiatives in subjects such as health and food safety to support the restaurant sector in the region and is implemented in coordination with local authorities and communities.

In 2016, the Enel group was awarded the right to enter into energy supply contracts for the Ayanunga plant following the fourth public auction on renewable energy launched by the Peruvian energy regulator OSINERGMIN. With a total of 326 MW of wind, solar and hydropower awarded, EGPP will be able to become the leading renewable operator in Peru by 2018 and the only company in the country to operate plants based on three different renewable technologies.

The Enel Group is present in the Peruvian generation sector through EGPP which is also currently involved in the construction of the 180 MW solar plant in Rubí, as well as through Enel Generación Perú and Enel Generación Piura, which have a total installed capacity of approximately 2 GW extension. The Group also operates in the distribution sector with Enel Distribución Perú, which serves nearly 1,4 million customers in the Lima region.
