Enea, renewables: investments and 280 hires in research

Arriving over 420 million investments and 280 new hires in the alternative energy sector, together with the strengthening of research, innovation and technology transfer activities. This was communicated by the Board of Directors of ENEA (the national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development), which approved the three-year plan of activities for the three-year period 2020-2022, the main programmatic document of strategic nature of the agency.

Among the priority sectors of activity there are: energy efficiency, decarbonisation of the economy, territorial security, cultural heritage, sustainable mobility, waste, the smart city, measures to adapt and combat climate change, the circular economy and, finally, the logistical organization of scientific expeditions to Antarctica.

The plan also highlights the creation of an experimental machine to develop solutions to some aspects of nuclear fusion, such as the management of high temperatures and the materials to be used, in order to produce renewable, sustainable and inexhaustible energy. A large scientific-technological hub on DTT fusion (Divertor Tokamak Test), which will be carried out by 2025 in the Research Center of Frascati, near Rome. A project made possible by major funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the support of the Lazio Region.

Certainly one of the most ambitious European projects in this field, with 600 million euros of investments and positive effects on both the national GDP and the Italian economy, together with the creation of 1500 jobs, including scientists and technicians, in addition to the 280 recruitments . The impact on GDP is estimated at around 2 billion euros and it will also be an opportunity to attract researchers and scientists from all over the world.

It is certainly a difficult challenge, which brings together research and innovation, but in the direction of sustainability and the environment. An initiative against the brain drain and which, in such a delicate moment for our country in the face of the Coronavirus emergency, can represent a great opportunity for Italy, but above all for the citizens.
