Enav wins contract for airport in Libya

ENAV has been awarded a contract with the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority for the construction of the control tower and technical block of Mitiga airport. The new structures will be adequately equipped for the provision of all air navigation services aimed at guaranteeing the full operation and safety of the airport. The value of the contract is equal to 5 million euros and the works will be completed by the end of 2017.

Due to the unavailability of Tripoli airport, the Mitiga airport, which is about 8 kilometers from the capital, is used to serve national and international flights that can currently land and take off in Libyan territory. Thanks to the construction of the new control tower, Libya will be able to guarantee the highest level of efficiency and safety in flight operations.

During the construction phase of the new plant, Enav will supply the Mitiga airport with a mobile control tower, a cutting-edge structure which, thanks to the technological equipment and the quality of the workstations, will allow air traffic controllers and the technical staff to operate in the best conditions.

Moreover, ENAV is already dealing with the training of 60 Libyan air traffic controllers following a contract signed last October. The project is aimed at training operating personnel who, due to the long inactivity caused by the closure of the airspace, need to maintain their qualification in order to operate.

This is the comment of the CEO of Enav, Roberta Neri: "This result, obtained thanks also to the synergy between the institutions and in particular to the decisive role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation which I would like to thank, adds up to the excellent performances recorded in the commercial activities in 2016. Moreover, for ENAV operating in Libya has a strategic importance that goes beyond the economic value of the contract. The southern area of our airspace borders with Libya which is currently forbidden to European flights. Succeeding in promoting the development of air transport and connections with Europe means, in perspective, increasing traffic flows of interest to our country and therefore revenues from regulated activities, thanks to the recovery of those routes which, before the prohibition of overflight, they crossed our skies".
