US elections, Obama ahead of Romney by one point

On the eve of the vote, these are the results of a survey published by the Wall Street Journal and Nbc – However, if one considers the margin of error, the gap closes to zero – The Financial Times sides with the outgoing President: “He demonstrated a government propositive".

US elections, Obama ahead of Romney by one point

It's still head to head between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. According to the latest poll on the race for the White House, the incumbent president would be leading by one point: 48% against 47% of the Republican candidate. The survey - published by the Wall Street Journal and NBC - shows such a narrow gap between the two candidates that it becomes zero if we consider the margin of error of 2,5 percentage points.

The poll was carried out between 1 and 3 November, contacting 1.475 voters. A similar survey, carried out by the Gallup institute for USA Today in some states held to be key to the election of the new president, gives both candidates 48%. The Pew research institute, which surveyed some voters who have already said they are certain of their choice, gives Obama a three-point lead over his challenger: the outgoing president is credited with 48% of the votes against 45% for his rival.

Meanwhile, on the eve of the "most important since 1980" electoral appointment, the Financial Times gives its endorsement to outgoing Democratic President Barack Obama, judging the vote in his favor as "the wisest bet" for the United States, "affected by the crisis".

"Neither of the two candidates has provided convincing answers on how to respond to the most important challenges", both in the economic field and in foreign policy, according to the British newspaper. But "it is clear that the two candidates have a different philosophy of government". Obama is an interventionist, especially in economic policy. While "Romney's versatility is based more on market research than on a real political philosophy".

For these reasons, concludes the FT, “Obama has demonstrated that a proactive government can be part of the solution, rather than the problem. After four years of financial crisis, with extreme inequality threatening the American dream, there remains an urgent need for intelligent, reformist leadership. Obama, with his presidency characterized by the economic crisis, seems the best choice”.
