Elections: turning point in Sicily, the center-left of Crocetta wins, Grillo first list, Pdl thud

The MEP of the Pd Rosario Crocetta is the new president of the Sicily Region. The 61-year-old former mayor of Gela, also supported by Casini's UDC, takes over from Raffaele Lombardo with a percentage of preferences that exceeds 30%, versus 25% of the direct opponent Nello Musumeci, candidate of the center-right, e 18% of Giancarlo Cancelleriof the 5 Star Movement.

Beppe Grillo's movement becomes the first party on the island with around 15% of the votes. A result that even obscures the overtaking of the Pd (13%) on the Pdl (12%), which had its historical stronghold in Sicily. However, abstention sets a new record, exceeding 52%

“With me it is the story that changes. On the island, someone like me would never have been elected – commented Crocetta -. I will seek the majority in the Chamber on the measures. I won't give in to any mess up, my history dictates it to me. We are working on the revolution and we will start by revoking expensive and unconstructive tasks. In this way we will see if this land does not have the resources to relaunch itself".

As for record abstention, Crocetta underlined how "behind those who don't vote there is always a sign of unease, and in some cases a protest that I don't feel guilty about, given the way politics has been managed in recent years ”. The imperative now is "abandon the protest, and focus on work."

On the other front, Musumeci takes note of the unexpected defeat: “We need to reflect on what happened – he said -. We have to start over immediately, because we are in the trenches”. Cancelleri, on the other hand, was very satisfied, speaking as if he were the new governor: “Now the fun begins. Real work."

They disappear from the Italia dei Valori and Sel regional parliament, while the Great South of presidential candidate Gianfranco Miccichè manages to obtain a few seats, which stops at 15%. To complete the picture of the candidates (all between 0,20% and 1,70% of the preferences) are Mariano Ferro dei Forconi (1,70%), Cateno De Luca of Sicilian Revolution (1,10%), Gaspare Sturzo of Free and Strong Italians (1%), Giacomo Di Leo of the Communist Party of Workers (0,20%) and Lucia Pinsone of Volunteers for Italy (0,20%).
