Elections Romania, the center-left triumphs

In Romania, the centre-left coalition triumphed in the elections with almost 60% of the votes. Prime Minister Victor Ponta's Social-Liberal Union (USL) has thus dealt a severe blow to the centre-right, led by President Traian Basescu, who will soon have to confer the task of forming a new government.

Together with Ponta's social democrats, the USL includes Crin Antonescu's liberals, who defined the electoral result as "a victory against Basescu's regime".

“As I promised the Romanians during the electoral campaign, I take on the responsibility of continuing to lead the USL government – stated Ponta in front of his supporters in Targu Jiu -. The orientation of the government that I am going to lead will be pro-European and pro-Atlantic. We are members of the European Union and of NATO and our future is within the European family”.

But the tug of war with President Basescu is not destined to end there. During the electoral campaign, the head of state made it clear that Ponta's position as prime minister is not automatic even in the event of a victory for the USL and called the prime minister a "mythomaniac".

However, Ponta launched an appeal to the political class and the president so that they understand that “Romania needs peace, a period of reconstruction. We must overcome the political struggle, hatred and revenge”.
