Europe breathes a sigh of relief. In Greece the pro-euro parties win. The affirmation of the conservatives of leader Samaras' New Democracy was clear, in favor of respecting the austerity commitments undertaken with Europe: they took 29,6% of the votes and conquered 129 seats. The radical left of Syriza is defeated which, despite having grown a lot compared to the previous elections, stops at 26,8% of the votes with 71 seats. In third place are the socialists of Pasok (12,28% of the votes with 33 seats), who will join a coalition government with the conservatives. The neo-Nazis of Golden Dawn also enter Parliament, arriving fifth.
Appreciations were immediately received both from the Eurogroup and from Germany who are preparing to grant extensions on the timing of Greece's austerity commitments. Warm encouragement for the formation of a new pro-euro government came from the White House which also urged Europe to grant new aid to Greece: "It is in everyone's interest - Obama said - that Athens remain in the euro".
Greece will be discussed today at the G20 summit in Mexico.
