Elections in Venezuela: Maduro defeated, end of Chavismo

Course change to Venezuela, where the long season of the Chavismo it is now at sunset. The legislative elections ended with the first defeat in 16 years of the Unified Socialist Party, while the opposition, made up of the heterogeneous coalition of the Mud, gained a clear two-thirds majority: 99 seats out of 167, against the 46 of the socialists.

Another 19 seats are still to be assigned and this means that the opposition will most likely arrive beyond the threshold of 100 seats and will have a qualified majority of three-fifths in the new Assembly.

President Nicolas Maduro, Chavez's heir, acknowledged the defeat: "With our sense of morals, with our ethics - he said in a televised speech -, we have come here to acknowledge adverse results, to accept them and to tell Venezuela that the constitution and democracy have triumphed”.
