Elections in Poland: all-female race, but the favorite is the anti-EU nationalist right

The polls for the political elections in Poland opened at 7 this morning. However, the all-female race sees the candidate of the anti-EU nationalist right as the clear favorite, who according to polls could obtain 32% of the votes. All that remains to be seen, with the polls closed, is whether the Law and Justice party will be able to govern alone

Elections in Poland: all-female race, but the favorite is the anti-EU nationalist right

The 7 political elections began this morning in Poland at 00:2015. There are 30,7 million voters called to the polls to choose their representatives for the Sejm, the lower house, and the Senate for the next four years.

According to polls, the elections in Poland will mark the clear victory of the right over the ruling party. The latest polls, in fact, give as favorite with the 32% Beata Szydlo, candidate of the nationalist Law and Justice party (Pis), clearly ahead of the current prime minister, Ewa Kopacz, 58-year-old leader of the center-right formation Civic platform which should get no more than 20% of preferences. Despite the good performance of the Polish economy, voters seem to be turning their backs on the ruling party, after several scandals over corruption and a policy considered by many voters to be too pro-European.

Like most of the European radical right, the Polish nationalist right based its race for power by focusing on social injustices, on the issue of refugees and on a sovereignty hostile to the advancement of European unity. Thanks to the broad consensus, the nationalist right managed to get its candidate elected to the presidency of the Republic in the spring. He then continued to gain votes on the refugee drama calling it a danger to the safety and health of citizens.

In short, the victory of the Law and Justice party is taken almost for granted, the only thing left to understand is whether the party will have the necessary majority to govern alone. There are 7 polling stations open this morning at 27.860 and will close this evening at 21.
