Elections in Canada: Trudeau's Liberals win by surprise
Justin Trudeau triumphed in the general elections held yesterday in Canada, reporting the Liberal Party in power after nine years. The outgoing prime minister, Stephen Harper, admitted defeat and resigned as leader of the Conservative Party.
At 23pm local time (5am in Italy) the Liberal Party was the holder of the absolute majority in the House of Commons with 43% of the vote, against about 30% of the Conservatives. According to Canadian television projections, Trudeau's formation is expected to exceed 170 seats out of 338.
In addition to the Conservatives, the other great losers of this electoral round are the Social Democrats of Thomas Muclair, who in 2011 had obtained 103 deputies by surprise, while this time they stopped below 40, signaling themselves as the third force in the country (a position which in the last elections was occupied by the liberals).
Justin Trudeau he is the eldest son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who died in 2000, in power for 15 years and considered the father of modern Canada. The new premier has guaranteed that the country will get closer to the Obama administration, but he has also annoyed the US by promising to withdraw troops from combat missions against ISIS.
