Elections Greece, Mitsotakis triumphs: the right obtains an absolute majority

Greece al vote for the second time within a month. This time, however, the second time is good for the conservative leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The right-wing party of Nea Demokratia triumphs in the elections and gets the absolute majority which allows him to be able to govern without descending to alliances.

As in the previous shift the conservative party is kept around 40% (40,52%) obtaining 158 of the 300 seats of which the Parliament is composed. Passed quota 151, necessary to govern alone. In May, the Right had stopped at 146 seats. Unlike the first round, this time the vote was held with a different electoral system, (an electoral law approved by Mitsotakis himself), which assigns to the first party 50 bonus seats. Award that enabled Nea Demokratia to obtain an absolute majority.

His main political rival, the leftist party Syriza driven by Alexis Tsipras, stops instead at 17,84% and obtains 48 seats. Follow the socialists of supply with 11,96% of the vote (32 seats) and the Communist Party of Kke (7,61% of preferences).

Mitsotakis' choice was rewarded

It was premiata, thus, the Mitsotakis' choice, which after the victory in the first round, had chosen not to seek an alliance by opting for new elections, counting precisely on the majority prize. A bet that ultimately paid off, despite the fact that the turnout has collapsed compared to May (52%).

"The expectations are high. I feel the most onerous duty to serve the country with all my strength, the Greeks have given us a strong mandate to proceed on the path of the great changes needed. I will be the prime minister of all Greeks, problems have no colour. When I took my first steps in politics 20 years ago, I didn't expect to be able to have such a strong mandate. The people have given us a secure majority. The big ones reforms will proceed rapidly” were the words after the victory of the re-elected premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Tsipras still loses badly

Alexis Tsipras, despite the heavy defeat already in the first round had promised to fight until the last second but it wasn't enough. Syriza does not reach 18%, obtaining 48 seats and doing even worse than the May elections (where it obtained 20,06% of the vote and 71 seats).

"Syriza assumes responsibility entrusted to him by popular vote” – declared Tsipras – “It goes without saying that in this reconstruction process I will be the first to submit to the judgment of the party members”. The Syriza secretary commented on the election result as one “Serious electoral defeat”, however, defining the electoral campaign as the "most difficult and most beautiful battle" faced by his party.

The far right enters Parliament

In addition to Nea Dimokratia, there is another political formation celebrating the result of the elections. Strengthens in Parliament theestrema destra Spartans party which exceeds the threshold obtaining 4,71% and 13 seats. Surprising goal for a party unknown until a few days ago, when it received the support of former Golden Dawn member, Ilias Kasidiaris.

“After a long time a nationalist party will be in parliament” exulted party chairman Vassilis Stigas. “The Spartans do not come to divide but to unite. The main motto of the Spartans is strength in union. Something that unfortunately is missing in our country today,” said Stigas.

Another party, called Niki, passes for the first time the threshold, obtaining 3,73% of the votes. The party is led by a theology teacher and is known for its xenophobic positions, being considered close to the conservative fringe of the Orthodox Church. Yes confirmation in Parliament the far-right formation, called Greek solution. The party is known for its anti-migrant stances and recorded an increase to 4,48% from 3,7% in 2019.

Outside the Varufakis Parliament

The left-wing party does not exceed the threshold (3%). MeRA25by the former finance minister Yanis Varufakis. Barrier also occurred in the first round of May. “Our non-entry is the least. Worst of all is the dirge of the left that has failed to prevent the transformation of anger into a far-right current,” Varoufakis commented.
