Austerity has not convinced the Greeks. The two parties that have assured the Troika (EU, ECB and IMF) to continue on the hard line of draconian pro-growth reforms, New Democracy and Pasok, according to the latest polls, together do not reach 40%. In first place is New Democracy, the centre-right party, which would have obtained between 19% and 20,5% of the vote. Pasok, the socialist party of Evangelos Venizelos, is in third position, between 13% and 14%. The silver medal, for now, seems to go to the radical Syriza party, which obtained at least 17% of the votes: he is the real winner of these elections. But the real surprise was the exploits of the extremist party (pro-Nazi) Golden Dawn, which seems to have captured at least 8%.
The winner will get 50 more seats than the 300 available in parliament. But if the data were to confirm, a coalition between New Democracy and Pasok alone would be very weak. And it is difficult to imagine a broader understanding between them and the radicals, since the latter have focused their own electoral campaign on the rejection of the rules dictated by the European Union.
