Elections, Calenda meets Letta: either with the Democratic Party or in the center. Renzi goes alone and waits for action in the third pole

Decisive meeting today between Letta and Calenda on the perimeter of the center-left breakfast: the leader of Action must decide whether to join or go alone to the vote, as Renzi has already announced, who dreams of the third pole precisely with Calenda

Elections, Calenda meets Letta: either with the Democratic Party or in the center. Renzi goes alone and waits for action in the third pole

The meeting between the leader of Action, Carlo Calenda, and the secretary of the Pd, Enrico Letta, scheduled for today, is destined to mark a decisive stage for the perimeter of the center-left alliance, from which the leader of Italia Viva has already distanced himself, Matteo Renzi who will go alone in the elections on 25 September.

SCHEDULED MEETING BETWEEN CALENDA AND LETTA: EITHER HERE OR THERE TOWARDS THE ELECTIONS

Until a few days ago, Calenda, who is studying the results of a survey commissioned ad hoc on electoral trends, seemed inclined to join the alliance with the Democratic Party, advocated by the partners of +Europe and in particular by Emma bonino, but the arrival of the ministers Mara Carfagna and Mariastella Gelmini in the ranks of Action seems to have changed the orientation because it is believed that an alliance with the Democratic Party and above all with allies too moved to the left or with which one has often dueled in recent years like Di Maio and Fratoianni would make it difficult for Forza Italia to win the moderate votes.

Letta will try to convince Calenda by recalling the stringent constraints of the Rosatellum which rewards coalitions and arguing that building a center pole risks letting the right win. But Calenda thinks the opposite, namely that the very creation of an independent reforming force can steal decisive votes from the right and prevent Italy from going towards sovereign and Eurosceptic tendencies, not to mention pro-Russian.

RENZI GOES ALONE BUT DREAMS OF THE THIRD CENTRAL POLO WITH CALENDA

Renzi has already opted for a solitary choice in the elections who, while excluding formal vetoes, the Democratic Party and above all the left wing show that they do not like it in the coalition, as also emerges from a survey of Democratic Party militants. “You don't win with piles, but with ideas” which are different from those of Fratoianni, Bonelli and Di Maio (to whom Bruno Tabacci lent the symbol of the Democratic Center) claims the leader of Italia Viva who explains: "I run alone in the center and if there are others like Calenda, good: I don't see the leader of Action in coalition with Fratoianni".

Renzi's dream is to create a central third pole with Calenda and with those who are in it, such as the refugees from Forza Italia. It is an uphill road but perhaps not impossible even if the personal coldness between Calenda and Renzi suggests that if there is an agreement, Action and Italia Viva will present two distinct electoral lists unless agreed in single-member constituencies.
