Calabria elections 2020: guide in 4 points

Sunday 26 January, between 7 and 23, the premieres are held regional elections of 2020. The media talk almost exclusively about the vote in Emilia Romagna, considered by many to be a sort of referendum on the Pd-M5S government, but in the same hours there will also be votes In Calabria.

1) WHO ARE THE CANDIDATES FOR THE ELECTION IN CALABRIA

Competing for the governor's seat in the toe of the boot are four candidates: Jole Santelli for the centre-right, Goofy Callipo for the centre-left, Francis Aiello for the 5 Star Movement and the independent Charles Tansi.

2) HOW THEY WERE CHOSEN

These names are the result of a laborious selection process, to say the least, on all fronts. At the beginning, Pd and Movimento 5 Stelle hypothesized to express a common candidate to unload the outgoing dem governor Mario Oliverio (who then stepped aside after an indictment for embezzlement) and have more chances to contend for the seat with the center-right , widely favored. But then the grillini, through a vote on Rousseau, decided to run alone.

In this way the centre-right's chances of victory increased even further, where even the choice of candidate was not easy and came only at the end of a feud to prevent the mayor of Cosenza, the blue Mario Occhiuto, from taking the field.

3) WHAT THE SURVEYS SAY

However, the contrasts did not affect the advantage of the centre-right. According to a survey conducted by Known Polls for the transmission "Porta a Porta" and made public in the middle of the month, Santelli – deputy and regional coordinator of Forza Italia, also supported by Lega and Fratelli d'Italia – could garner a share of consensus between 50 and 54%. Callipo, a tuna entrepreneur, would instead stop almost 20 points below, between 32 and 36%. Third with a very wide gap is the university professor Francis Aiello – full professor of Economic Policy and International Economics at the University of Calabria, in Cosenza – which according to Noto should not exceed 8-12%. As for Bronze, former head of the regional civil protection and civic candidate, would stop at 3-5%. The lists connected to him therefore risk remaining outside the regional council, since a threshold of 8% is envisaged for coalitions.

4) HOW TO VOTE

As for the voting methods, we recall that split voting is not possible: the voter can only put the cross on the name of the candidate for president and/or on the symbol of one of the lists linked to him. It can also be expressed a preference for council candidates.
