Emilia-Tuscany power line, Terna: construction sites to start in 2021

The works for the construction of the new power line "Colunga-Calenzano", between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, they will start by the end of 2021. He announces it in a note Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, underlining that "the work, between the provinces of Bologna and Florence, is one of the most important projects for the development of the national electricity grid envisaged by the 2021-2025 Business Plan".

The power line, which requires an investment of 170 million by Terna, "it will increase the exchange capacity between North and Centre-North" and "it will contribute to solving grid congestion in one of the critical areas of the national electricity system, guaranteeing greater efficiency and sustainability of the regional electricity infrastructure", reads the note again.

The project will involve 12 Municipalities, of which nine in the province of Bologna (Castenaso, San Lazzaro, Ozzano, Pianoro, Monterenzio, Monghidoro, San Benedetto Val di Sambro, Castiglione dei Pepoli and Loiano) and 3 in the province of Florence (Firenzuola, Barberino del Mugello and Calenzano). Overall, the new line will be 84 kilometers long (39 in Emilia-Romagna and 45 in Tuscany) and will replace a 220 kV power line built more than 60 years ago.

“About 106 km of old overhead power lines will be demolished, 68 in Emilia-Romagna and 38 in Tuscany, which will make it possible to free up a total of over 200 hectares of land – explains Terna – With more than 16 km of new underground lines, the work, to an improvement in the safety and resilience of the electricity system, will generate important environmental benefits for local communities".

50% of the construction of the new "Colunga-Calenzano" will take place following the existing route, so as not to involve new territories. Variations will be envisaged, agreed with the Municipalities concerned, in correspondence with buildings and inhabited centers developed after the construction of the existing line at the end of the 50s. Terna will also evaluate the possibility of optimizing the insertion of the new line into the surrounding environment through a study of the colors of the area on the pylons located in the areas of greatest landscape value.
