In January 2020, according to data collected by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, electricity demand in Italy was 27,5 billion kWh, down by 4% compared to the same month in 2019. This result was obtained with one working day less (21 vs 22) and with one average monthly temperature 1,7°C higher than in January 2019. The seasonally adjusted figure corrected for calendar and temperature effects brings the variation to -2,9%.
At the territorial level, the January 2020 trend variation was negative everywhere: -3,5% in the North, -4,7% in the Center and -4,6% in the South. In economic terms, the seasonally adjusted value adjusted for the effects of calendar and temperature of the electricity required in January 2020 recorded a positive change (+0,4%) compared to the previous month (December 2019). This result brings the trend profile to a stationary trend.
In January 2020, 87,9% of the demand for electricity was met with domestic production and the remainder (12,1%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (24,3 billion kWh) was down (-6,6%) compared to January 2019. Growing sources of hydro (+21,9%) and photovoltaic (+18,1%) production. The sources of geothermal (-1,4%), thermal (-9,9%) and wind (-26,3%) production are decreasing.
