Electricity consumption recovering in 2021, renewables are growing

The recovery of electricity consumption continues in Italy, after the phase of decline due to the Covid restrictions in 2020. The data is also a very important indicator for "measuring" the recovery of industrial and commercial activities, and according to Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, confirmed its recovery also in January. In that month, the demand for electricity throughout the country amounted to 27,1 billion kWh: a value which - seasonally adjusted and adjusted for calendar and temperature effects - results in a cyclical improvement in the +0,8% compared to December 2020.

On a trend level, electricity demand in Italy is instead 1% lower than that of January 2020. However, it should be considered, Terna specifies, that this year January had two working days less and an average monthly temperature 0,7°C lower than in January 2020: the adjusted value leads to a positive change of 0,2%.

The contribution of renewable energy sources is also growing, which they have at the beginning of 2021 covered about 34% of the demand (compared to 30% in January 2020). Strong growth in wind production (+58%), positive also in water production (+7,7%); on the other hand, production from geothermal sources (-4,9%), thermoelectric (-6,9%) and photovoltaic (-24,7%) decreased.

More than comforting signals also fromIMCEI index: the sample of industrial consumption monitored by Terna shows growth both on a trend basis (+3,1% compared to January 2020) and, for the fourth month in a row, by the economic situation (+0,7% compared to December 2020).

In January 2021, the demand for Italian electricity was 87,6% satisfied with national production and for the remainder (12,4%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries (+1,1% compared to January 2020). In detail, net national production was equal to 23,9 billion kWh.
