Terna: electricity consumption recovering also in February

In February i electricity consumption in Italy they were substantially in line with those of last year, with the same calendar. This was communicated by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity transmission grid, in its monthly survey.

In detail, last month, electricity demand amounted to 24,8 billion kWh, 3,4% lower than in February 2020. Last year, however, February had one more day (29 against 28). "The figure, seasonally adjusted and corrected for the effects of the calendar and temperature, is reduced to -0,2%", Terna reports.

A geographical level, the trend variation February 2021 (raw data) was strongly negative: in the North (-4,2%), while the Center and the South respectively recorded a decrease of -2,8% -1,9% in the South. The sources renewables covered 33% of demand (in line with February 2020).

“After four consecutive months of growth the IMCEI index (the sample of industrial consumption monitored by Terna), now back to pre-crisis values, shows a slight downward trend (with the same calendar) equal to 1,7% compared to February 2020”, continues Terna.

Moving forward with the data, in the first two months of 2021 (January-February), electricity demand recorded an overall decline of 2,2% compared to the same period of 2020. The adjusted figure, strongly influenced by leap year 2020, leads to no change.

Going back to February of this year, 82,3% of Italian electricity demand was met with national production and for the remainder (17,7%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries (+8,2% compared to February 2020). In detail, net national production amounted to 20,7 billion kWh. Water production grew sharply (+32%), other sources decreased (wind -27,6%; photovoltaic -15,8%; geothermal -7,2%; thermal -7,1%).

The IMCEI index developed by Terna shows a downward trend of 1,7% considering the calendar effect. Under the sector profile, the growth of the iron and steel industry continues (+3,5%), the non-ferrous metals sector is also positive (+9,4%). The overall figure was affected by the negative values above all for chemicals (-14%) and mechanics (-4,6%).

Separately analyzing the so-called Pure customers (those that exclusively withdraw from the network) and self-producers, the tendential variation shows a decrease of 1,3% and 11,3% respectively.
