Electric cars, recharging on the motorway: in Italy there are still few recharging stations, the North-South gap is strong

Italians who have bought aelectric car and they travel on the highway they have serious charging problems. If they don't plan their trip well, they risk being stuck. Fear grows, obviously, in these weeks of travel for the holidays. The site InsideEVsu, specialized in the sector, did a reconnaissance on the columns available along the highways. In the approximately 7 km of motorway network, out of 506 service stations that supply fuel, only 59 (11,6%) can recharge electric cars. In total, i charging points there are 254. A very low number in relation to the market and the promotions of the manufacturers to grow green mobility.

Not only that: the high power columns they are found in just 38 stations, and high power are precisely the most requested cars – from 150 to 350 kW – which can be recharged in a maximum of 30 minutes. Besides, alone Germany and Holland are well placed in this field overall.

Electric car charging points: the southern motorways are almost off limits

Bridging the Italian delay in the realization of charging stations for electric cars compared to European standards it is a goal of the ecological transition. According to other forecasts, in 2023 the situation could improve. At present, the territorial lack of homogeneity must also be counteracted. Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, Valle d'Aosta and Umbria are the Regions that have the most service areas equipped with electric car charging points, on average one every 100 km. The South it is almost off limits: there are columns in no station in Basilicata, Molise and Sicily. Motorists traveling with an electric car have to leave the motorway and the charging point is not always nearby. Autostrade per l'Italia, through the Free to X plan is taking steps to reduce the inconvenience.

Despite the responsibility of placing the top-ups lies with the concessionary companies, InsideEVs in his research he says that most of the motorway concessionaires have not yet moved. An obvious contradiction, even if they probably want to see more clearly the market trend. With the high prices of petrol, diesel and gas, registrations should go up again. Meanwhile, to cross Italy on board aelectric car it is necessary to inquire before taking a toll booth.
