Egypt: protests flare up, Morsi flees the presidential palace

Mohammed Morsi fled the presidential palace, and clashes are taking place outside between protesters and the forces of order.

According to some rumors, Morsi may have headed for his private residence in the eastern suburbs of Cairo.

Protesters managed to break the security cordon and tear gas was fired to disperse the march of several thousand people. Some tried to climb over the protective fences but were blocked by other participants.

According to some sources, only the Republican Guards remained to guard the interior of the presidential palace.

The tens of thousands of people who took to the streets contest the presidential decrees with which Morsi assumed almost absolute powers, also overruling the role of the judiciary.

For the protesters it is a sort of "last warning". The violence erupted when some demonstrators tore down a barrier surmounted by barbed wire a few hundred meters from the walls of the building.
