EDISON OPEN 4EXPO – Science and technology with Fabiola Gianotti

With the presence of the next director of CERN in Geneva Fabiola Gianotti, the Edison Foundation completed the path dedicated to innovation of the Edison Open 4Expo review which was held during the six months of the universal exposition in Milan.

Professor Gianotti met the public at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan and was a guest at the conference "Science and Technology, a European and International Perspective", organized by the Edison Foundation to draw attention to the excellence of our home, such as universities and centers of research, with the hope that in the future they can be more and more adequately valued. The appointment completes the cycle of six meetings dedicated to the great innovators of the economy - from the Nobel prize Amartya Sen, to professor Joel Mokyr, up to the eco-feminist Bina Agarwal - who in these months of the Universal Exposition have contributed to enriching the offer culture of the city.

At the end of the meeting, the director launched the Sound of Energy concert, the creative performance with the harp of light by Pietro Pirelli and Giampietro Grossi. The interior of the Theater has been transformed into a huge musical instrument crossed by beams of laser light which have also been pinched by the audience in the hall, giving rise to extraordinary visual as well as musical effects.

Gianotti is the symbol of Italian excellence in research. In fact, his training took place at the University of Milan, where he also obtained his doctorate. You entered Cern in 1994 and you have conducted multiple experiments for the development of data analysis software. From 2009 to 2013 she headed the renowned ATLAS project, the experiment involving over 3000 physicists from 38 countries and which led to the discovery of the Higgs boson, the so-called God particle. From 2016 she will be the first woman to hold the position of director of Cern, "the cradle of technological innovation, as well as a concrete example of scientific cooperation and peace on a world level", as the professor herself declared at the time of her appointment.

Edison Open 4EXPO in 6 months of appointments exceeded 20 visitors with over 26 million views of its social pages. The historic headquarters of Palazzo Edison, the Rotonda della Besana and the Edison Open Garden Triennale were the scene of 300 events (25 a week) whose leitmotif was innovation declined in the fields of new technologies, sustainability, growth economic and social.

On the sustainability front, three seminars were held in preparation for COP 21 in Paris on 30 November, dedicated to the effects of climate change and initiatives on sustainable mobility; such as The Sun Trip, the challenge on solar bikes from Milan to Turkey and the Wolf Bike Tour in the Abruzzo National Park in support of slow mobility and slow food.
