round table: that's what they called it and it is mainly aimed at businesses and schools. On Monday 23 October, the Ministry of Business and ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) present the stages of the "Let's circulate" campaign dedicated toThe circular economy and to the fight against food waste in Italy.
The round table is held at the Institute's headquarters and serves to explain that good sustainability actions start at home. Saving on food in the consumer society is not only a moral obligation compared to those in the world who also look for food in landfills. It is a rule that must be adopted in daily behavior, becoming more diligent.
Pope Francis lhe recalled a few days ago: “Throwing food in the bin means not valorizing the sacrifice, work, means of transport and energy costs used to bring quality food to the table. It means despising those who work daily in the agricultural, industrial and service sectors." Let's start thinking, a product purchased and allowed to expire has an infinite series of steps and therefore costs behind it. The economic system has perverse social and environmental effects when a value is impoverished.
Characterizing the round table in Rome will be, among others, the fashion entrepreneur Ilaria Venturini Fendi and the vice-president of the Italian Parents Movement Elisabetta Scala. Two figures who can encourage responsible behavior in young people. Even in this battle, children can be the solution and not the problem. It is said: young people waste at home and abroad, now we are trying to change the pattern.
Pope Francis' solution
The Ministry and Ispra have also defined a thematic platform with 150 projects with interviews with entrepreneurs and citizens. The campaign will have two television commercials with persuasive content, because the economy of recovery, or non-waste, has cultural bases.
There are two objectives: useful actions with practical advice and the networking of different actors in society to promote changes in everyday life. We start with the shopping cart and then take care in consuming what we have purchased.
According to Eurostat, every Italian throws away on average 146 kg of food per year, with an individual cost of 385 euros; total for adults and children: 22,8 billion euros per year. The site too Echoes of cities who supports the campaign says that "not only food is thrown away, but everything behind its production".
Lo sFood shortages, in other words, are an affront to the poor and a diseconomy that Italy can no longer afford. How can we put an end to it and make us all feel part of a circular system? “It is necessary to invest financial resources, unite wills and move from mere declarations to clear and incisive decisions”. Who said it, the Italian government beyond the promotional campaign? No. Pope Francis.
