Here is WiFi Italia, the app for surfing for free

Project realized in synergy by the Mise, the Mibact and the Agency for Digital Italy. Coverage is still limited, with connections mainly in the centre-north. It will allow citizens and tourists to be able to connect with their smartphones especially in places of public interest.

Here is WiFi Italia, the app for surfing for free

It is available from Thursday 13 July WiFi°Italy°It (more simply WiFi Italia), an application that allows you to locate public WiFi networks and surf the whole country for free. This is the first national network, free and free for citizens and tourists.

We will no longer have to try to connect, very often in vain, to obsolete networks of municipalities, libraries, museums and other public bodies. The operation of the project is still limited, and for now the service is active almost exclusively in the centre-north. The will of the promoters is to expand the project. In the future, in fact, a way will be created to connect to public networks via computer with a single identifier, and the application will also be usable to access various other public services (for example, ticket purchase, content consultation)

The application was born on the initiative of Ministry of Economic Development, the Mibact and Agency for Digital Italy, and is part of the objectives set by the European Community on telecommunications. The purpose of WiFi Italia is to make public and private connections more accessible, valuing in particular those of places of cultural importance and frequented by tourists.

In practice, the project was implemented by Infratel Italy, Mise company born in 2003 to build telecommunications networks in areas of market failure, i.e. where it is not convenient for private operators to develop their own networks. On the official website of the project, a tool is available, aimed at both public and private subjects, to join and thus make their WiFi network available.

It is possible to download the “WiFi°Italia°It” app for iOS and Android smartphones. After a first step dedicated to registering personal data, it is possible to see the public WiFi networks throughout the country, locate the closest one and then connect.
