Antonio Maccanico, great adviser of La Malfa and Pertini and former president of Mediobanca has passed away

At the age of 88, Antonio Maccanico, a great adviser to Ugo La Malfa and secretary general of the Quirinale with the president Sandro Pertini, passes away after a long illness – He also had an eye on finance: a friend of Enrico Cuccia, he was president of Mediobanca in a moment of transition for the Milanese institute.

Antonio Maccanico died this morning in a Roman clinic at the age of 88. Originally from Avellino, he has held various public offices in recent decades. He was secretary general of the Quirinale with Pertini, several times minister and undersecretary of the Prime Minister with Ciampi. Outside the state sphere, he is also remembered as one of the presidents of Mediobanca.

Graduated in law in 1946 at the Mussolini College of the University of Pisa, in 1947 Maccanico embarked on a career as a parliamentary official. He was appointed assistant secretary general of the House in 1972 and secretary general in 1976. 

In 1978 Sandro Pertini, newly elected Head of State, called Maccanico to fill the role of secretary general of the Presidency of the Republic, also appointing him councilor of state. He also held the position with Francesco Cossiga, until 1987, the year in which he was appointed president of Mediobanca. During the Prodi government he was Minister of Posts and Communications (1996-1998). He was also minister for regional affairs (1988-1991) and for institutional reforms (1999-2001).
