E-commerce, growth continues also in 2022: +14% in Italy in the first quarter

E-commerce, growth continues also in 2022: +14% in Italy in the first quarter

According to Netcomm's analysis, they are 33,3 million Italians have bought online a good or service in the last three months, +9,6 million compared to the same pre-pandemic period, with an average of 1,3 purchases per month. Purchases prevail with digital payment systems at the time of ordering (almost 90%), while the use of traditional systems such as cash or bank transfers is decreasing, both online and in physical stores. Online purchases will grow by 2022% in 14 reaching 45,9 billion euros. Products mark a +10% compared to 2021 and reach 34 billion, while services are worth 11,9 billion (+28% compared to 2021).

From a product point of view, the agribusiness it is confirmed as the most dynamic sector also in 2022, with a growth of +17% year on year. In services, after the collapse linked to the measures to limit mobility in the last two years, there is a recovery of tourist trips (+33%) and the return in the presence of institutional events, (+ 35%).

Platforms on total retail purchases are 11% as in 2021 and lo smartphone the preferred device for making online purchases is confirmed: in 2022 55% of the e-commerce value passes through these channels. In these two years, in fact, there has been a strong rooting of remote work and the acceleration of the request for new services, as well as the search for new skills on the part of companies.

The contrast between physical and online commerce seems to have been definitively overcome and sustainability is an increasingly decisive paradigm for the relationship between supply and demand. However, the tendency to buy back is decreasing, which today accounts for 54,9%. Online purchases are largely paid for when the order is placed and only in 10,4% of cases are paid for upon delivery or when using the service (for example, at the end of a hotel stay).
