Ducati relies on Hera for energy efficiency and waste management: here are the results

Ducati, the motorcycle manufacturer from Borgo Panigale, is committed actively in environmental protection and in reduction of environmental impact of its activities. The company has set itself the goal of reconciling sustainability and productivity through environmental protection, recovery and enhancement projects. And to meet these challenges collaborates with the Hera Group, a multi-utility based in Bologna.

Collaboration to optimize energy efficiency

The two Emilian realities work together for use processes and technologies which reduce the environmental impact of Ducati's activities, with a specific focus on waste management and on the optimization ofenergy efficiency.

Thanks to the effort of the team Herambiente Industrial Services (Hasi), a subsidiary of Hera, Ducati has managed to minimize the percentage of waste destined for disposal, less than 2%. This result was obtained thanks to careful work on Ducati processes, which maximize waste separation from the moment of production, with particular attention also to logistics to optimize its movement.

Waste recovery and reuse

The partnership with Hasi has allowed Ducati to implement a treatment plan highly efficient for i industrial waste. In 2022, the company succeeded in start 98% of the waste for recovery produced at the Borgo Panigale plant.

Il management process of waste adopted covers all aspects, from the separation of waste from the moment of production, to the optimization of logistics and the maximization of recycling. In addition to packaging in cardboard, plastic or mixed materials, particular and complex materials are also managed, such as the filters used to reduce emissions. Even this waste, after appropriate treatment, is recovered through waste-to-energy.

Energy efficiency thanks to trigeneration

In collaboration with Hera, Ducati has developed a trigeneration plant at its headquarters, managed by Hera Servizi Energia (HSE). The plant is capable of supply electricity, heating and cooling reducing CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere.

During 2022, the plant has produced 13.159 MWh of electricity, which has covered 83% of the requirement of the entire plant. The remaining part of the electricity required is purchased from external renewable energy sources.

Since it went into operation in 2016, the trigeneration plant has avoided the emission of 9.369 tons of CO2, of which 1.508 tons in 2022 alone. These figures, for example, correspond to what would be emitted by around 3.000 plane trips from New York to Rome or the annual CO2 absorption of a forest of about 250 hectares.

Ducati's commitment to the environment

The collaboration with the Hera Group is part of thewider commitment of Ducati towards the sustainability and a business environmental friendly, aiming to create lasting and tangible changes that promote the health of the territory and the well-being of the people.

As evidence of Ducati's approach to environmental protection and how this attention has been integrated into their daily operations, in December 2022 the new structure called "Finishing and Aesthetic Resolution". This building is classified as NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building), or with almost zero energy requirements because it was designed according to accurate criteria of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
