Draghi in the Senate: “Worried about holding the majority? Let's see, let's continue to support Ukraine”

"Worried about holding the majority? “I don't know, let's see, let's see…”. These are the only words spoken by the Prime Minister Mario Draghi on the internal vicissitudes of the majority called to present a resolution after the intervention of the Premier in the Senate in view of the European Council of 23 and 24 June. In the late afternoon, however, the alarm subsided and the parties managed to reach an agreement.

Draghi in the Senate: "We continue to support Ukraine"

“We are approaching the fourth month since the start of the Russian occupation of Ukraine. New atrocities by the Russian military keep emerging. War crimes will be investigated and punished. The Italian government together with the EU and G7 partners intends continue to support Ukraine as this Parliament has told us to do,” Draghi said in the Senate. "Italy's strategy - he continued - in agreement with the EU and the G7, moves on two fronts, we support Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia so that Moscow ceases hostilities and agrees to sit at the negotiating table".

"Sanctions work”; assured the Prime Minister, explaining that “the International Monetary Fund forecasts that they will affect the Russian economy by 8,5 points of GDP. Time has revealed that these measures are increasingly effective. But Our channels of dialogue remain open, we will not stop seeking peace, on terms that Ukraine will choose”. Draghi then reiterated: “Alone an agreed peace and not suffered it can be really long-lasting.

Dragons on wheat: "Huge humanitarian crisis"

The ongoing conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis of extraordinary dimensions. Grain supplies in the poorest countries are at risk" and "millions of tons of the previous harvest" are blocked in Ukrainian ports, the premier said, underlining the importance of "freeing up the stocks that are in the warehouse to free up supplies and make room for the new crop that will arrive in September”.

“In the immediate future, we must carry out the demining of the ports and guarantee the safe exit of the ships. But after several failed attempts, I see no alternative to adopting a UN resolution where the UN guarantees the operation under its aegis", Prime Minister Draghi said in the Senate.

Dragons on gas: "From 2023 we will be less dependent on Moscow"

“In the last few days the Russia reduced gas supplies. As early as next year we could reduce dependence on Russian gas", assured Draghi in the Senate, explaining that precisely the cuts established by Moscow, "with Europe's difficulties increasing dramatically" make the need for "even more urgent" introduce a cap on gas prices.

The resolution on Ukraine and the conflicts in the majority

Since 9 this morning, the majority parties have met to define the text of the resolution on the premier's communications Dragons. For hours, the various forces discussed the provision, with the M5S asking to include in the text the obligation for Draghi to intervene in Parliament before each EU Council and every new decision to send weapons to Ukraine. A position on which the Government has strongly opposed.

In the end, however, the agreement on the text of the majority resolution on Prime Minister Draghi's communications has arrived, reports Ansa. The M5s also signed the agreement.

“Continue to guarantee the necessary e broad involvement of the Chambers, with the modalities provided therein, on the occasion of the most important international summits regarding the war in Ukraine and the support measures for Ukrainian institutions, including the transfer of military supplies". This is the passage on which the majority forces have found agreement. In the text, among other things, the government undertakes to “demand, together with the European partners, from the Russian authorities the immediate cessation of military operations and the withdrawal of all military forces illegitimately occupying Ukrainian soil, with multilateral or bilateral initiatives useful for a military de-escalation that brings about a change of phase in the conflict, while simultaneously increasing diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and for the principles of international law”.

“I thank the Senate for support to help Ukraine defend freedom and democracy”, to “continue with the sanctions” on Russia, “to seek a lasting peace that respects the rights and freedoms of Ukraine”, to “continue, in short , on the road designed by decree law 14 of 22”, said Prime Minister Mario Draghi in the replies to the Senate before the EU Council. "I thank" the Senate "for the unitary support - said Draghi - unity is essential".
