Draghi is thinking about the Conte-Gentiloni relay, but there is the M5S node

Draghi starts consultations this afternoon in search of a majority that is not there for now – The main issue concerns the Five Stars, who have not yet metabolized Conte's exit but possible signs have arrived from the former prime minister and Di Maio – Berlusconi also opens – We begin to think of the team with big names, half politicians and half technicians

Draghi is thinking about the Conte-Gentiloni relay, but there is the M5S node

The road ahead of the prime minister in charge is not an easy one Mario Draghi to form the new government. First there is from find a majority overcoming the psychodrama that crosses the increasingly bewildered Five Stars, then you have to solve the riddle Giuseppe Conte, who in the last few hours, however, has made it clear that from him “no obstacle to Draghi”.

This afternoon Draghi begins the consultations, from which we will begin to understand what kind of government he has in mind and what perimeter he profiles for the majority it will try to create. It will take time to understand whether Draghi's attempt will be successful, but from what we can imagine the former President of the ECB has in mind a "high-profile" government, partly technical and partly political, formed by a few and selected representatives of the parties and by important personalities of the institutions. With the aim of taming the pandemic by accelerating vaccinations, of rewriting the Recovery Plan, quickly erasing Brussels' doubts about Italy, and of attacking the recession and social crisis.

To achieve such ambitious goals, Draghi would be thinking of bringing back the European commissioner for economic affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, who has already been prime minister and who is also one of the reference points of the Democratic Party, to whom to entrust the role of Minister of Economy to mark the discontinuity, even if Draghi has a good relationship with the current minister Roberto Gualtieri, who could have other duties. If Gentiloni enters the government, his seat in Brussels could go to the outgoing premier Giuseppe Conte, which would thus remain in the institutional and international circle and could favor the channeling of the Five Stars towards support, for now denied, for the nascent Draghi government.

Apart from Gentiloni (or in the alternative Gualtieri) there would be few representatives of the parties in the new government: Di Maio, which would remain at Foreign Affairs, Hope to Healthcare, Guerini to the Defense or to the Interior, Bellanova o Rosato agriculture or public education e Tajani if Forza Italia were to enter the majority. But next to them there would be independent personalities of the highest order such as Martha Cartabia to Justice, Enrico Giovannini at work, Luciana Lamorgese internally, while the delegation to the secret services could be entrusted Gianni DeGennaro.

It would be difficult for anyone to say no to a team with such a high political and technical profile - which someone already calls Draghi's dream team - but the formation of a secure majority in the Senate and above all in the House it is not yet within reach, because the Five Stars are experiencing a very strong identity crisis and are for now oriented towards not trusting the Draghi government. The decisions of former Prime Minister Conte but also those of the Foreign Minister will greatly influence their final orientationLuigi DiMaio, who asked for a political government but made it clear that the Five Stars must be responsible and must listen without prejudice to the proposals of the prime minister in charge. "We have a duty to listen" Draghi, said Di Maio, and "to then take a position on the basis of what the parliamentarians decide".

At present they are sure they are voting for trust in Draghi the Democratic Party, Italia Viva, Action by Calenda, +Europe, the Democratic Center by Tabacci and Cambiamo by Toti, but the numbers are not enough and the majority is still far away. Draghi needs the votes of Forza Italy, which is the most open and which has already partially opened with the declarations of Silvio Berlusconi. "President Mattarella's choice goes in the direction we have been indicating for weeks: that of a personality with a high institutional profile around whom we can try to achieve the substantial unity of the country's best energies". Some votes in favor are also needed of the Five Stars and/or the League, while Brothers of Italy has already said that he is against or at most of reaching thethe entire center-right will abstain. Without the votes of the Five Stars and/or the League, the majority is not there and the Grillini stomach aches are still strong, even if Conte and Di Maio have opened the door. Draghi will try to clear the ground from this afternoon but everyone knows that SuperMario is the man of impossible missions.
