“It is not the responsibility of the European Central Bank to regulate bitcoin.” This was stated by the president of the ECB, Carlo Draghi, answering some questions on the cryptocurrency as part of the #AskDraghi initiative. Starting from a question from an Italian student who asked Draghi for advice on whether or not to invest in bitcoin, the number one of the ECB stated that it is not his job to give advice of this type, suggesting "caution" in any case.
At any rate Draghi does not consider bitcoin a currency for two reasons. The first is that "the value of bitcoin fluctuates sharply, while one euro today is one euro tomorrow and its value is stable", in addition to the fact that while currencies have "the central banks of their countries and their governments behind them" , this does not happen for cryptocurrency.
